Paging all Holset turbo owners!

So I may have reached my limit on my vnt's sticky vanes and adjustment ridden control linkage.... So i bow to its complexity and am now looking for a modern wastegated turbo that will suit my needs. So after doing some scouring it would appear as if the Holset turbos are gaining in popularity. The turbo in question, HE211W (I think) sounds like it would suit me quite well.... Its a 1.6 no frills, Giles super pump, studs, in an 81 rabbit currently running ~15 PSI. So i guess what i need from the masses is reassurance in my decision for this turbo and to tell me where in the hell can i get one???
Correct me if i'm wrong, but it sounds like @Alcaid and @Theman53 are the pioneers on here with these turbos so any input from either of them would be great!

I don't really know what to say. I like mine, Alcaid says they will be reliable and from what I have seen in their construction they will hold up better than anything else out there.
Mitsubishi makes VERY similar turbos from what I have seen on the smaller turbos, they are identical. But no one is running them and you would have to size it all by yourself for what your goals are.
Mine is the big brother He221w to the 211w, but it spools very well for me. The 360 main bearing that comes in these stock is the ticket for life and spool. If I were to do it again, I definitely would. I would not fabricate a different turbo setup for myself. I think the VNT libby does would be awesome, but I am not as good as he is with that kind of fab and the holset covers a huge range spooling like a smaller turbo and flowing like a bigger one.
Read my build thread part 2 if you are really interested in everything I said before. Probably about mid way I blow the second T3 and go the HE221w route.

Ah i knew there was someone else that paved this road Gizmoman! I have read Theman53's and your thread in their entirety at least once.
It seems like a rascal to get hands on one of these, but i don't want to come back and need to swap out another turbo ever again if i can help it. So it sounds like i need to get good ol Alcaid to sell me one assuming he can get one....

Alcaid was great to work with - mine showed up a week early but it might have just been perfect circumstances with the shipping gods.
If your into reading long posts, here's another
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=34145.105 which is where I made the decision to go Holset instead of VNT (skip to the last two pages).
The VNT may have provided a bit more low end but for simplicity, IMHO the Holset is excellent. My application is an AAZ with a medium port job on the head and a Frozen Boost IC - also very short piping.

I'll help everyone that has a need for these amazing little turbos and also the bigger Holsets if anyone feels like it

Early next week I am tuning a friends 1.9TDI ALH/AGR with the Holset HE200WG and DSS .280 nozzles, first time we try these turbos on a DI and not just the IDIs

Alcaid is talking about my car. We are a little behind schedule with this built. New exhaust was made on Monday, my PD150 intake manifold arrived today, and it is still running a fist edition tune. I am happy with the turbo. It is a little slow to full boost pressure (currently 22,4PSI), but it is very drivable for daily use and a nice pull from about 2000rpm and takes off around 2500 rpm

Nice; color me interested as well. I am going to run an old-style T3 with a 50 trim cold housing and try to hit those same boost goals; if/when my turbo goes I might just step up to a HE221W. We'll all have very interesting and diverse setups to compare against if mine blows up as well (but srsly hoping not!). Hope you end up doing a build thread if you haven't already somewhere else!

The build thread of this car is all in Norwegian in a forum only readable by paying members
I'm working on a translation over at
TDIClub, same username. First parts are published, hoping to get the rest up by the end of the week

Okay so for the past few days you holset owners have been bugging me.
...
To buy one

Ive had a vnt 15 sitting in a box for about a year or more now that I've been too lazy to bolt on. I have a 1.6td block and head (MF I think?) And an n/a pump gov modded. I'm so tired of not having boost but now as I'm just about ready to buy the last few bits, all these holset threads are coming up and I'm hearing amazing things about power AND reliability. I'm half considering selling my vnt now and putting that money towards a holset.
Question being: will these do okay on unmodified heads or with light porting? Seems most people running these have a lot of work done to the heads. I was planning on just running my little vnt at 16-18 psi and hoping for around 115 HP. But when these monsters are available it seems like a shame to bolt that on... I guess what I'm asking is how much other work is involved if I give up the vnt and head towards a holset? And what is a reasonable power level for reliability with one of these and a stock engine? (Intercooled of course)

From Alcaid:
No need for anything but a stock engine, but in the 173whp example it was a bone stock 1.6TD bottom end, bone stock 1.9TD/AAZ head, this turbo, a good FMIC setup and a 11mm pump build by Dieselmeken in Sweden, thats about it...
damac: I think alcaid is getting these to us for approx. 625.00 shipped. Check his deal in the for sale section.
