US to CANADA trip
« on: March 31, 2014, 06:39:02 am »
What do I need to cross the border and come back with engines?  Details would be great and experiences with taxes or duties. Thanks.

From what I gather now a days you need a passport or similar to get into Canada and you didn't back then.

I had the Canadian guy meet me across the border in NY, above niagra falls, he did all the work I slipped him 100 dollars for his time and getting them across.

take your pass port and i'd get a written "bill of sale" from the seller.  i just did this in november, my car was searched coming back into the states, but it really was no big deal, and they didn't question anything about the engines, actually the border officer we dealt with was from york county as well, and had friends that were into vws.  this was the maine-new brunswick border.

Make sure your car is clean and normal looking. Don't have temp tags either. I met up with burn your money once to get some parts. I had temp tags and no interior in my car except two front seats. They got suspicious that I was only in canada for 30 minutes chocked my wheels surrounded my car and escorted me inside. They ended up letting me go after about 30 minutes didt even care about the parts. they just asked why I was in canada and I said to buy used auto parts.

I was in Montreal last summer to visit a friend.  I had at least 3 different border patrol people on the US side go through my truck, in the line to get to the border.  When I reached the border, I was pulled inside and they did a thorough check of the truck.

Maybe driving a 81 Rabbit pick up was the wrong vehicle choice. Got a lot of questions about it.  Glad I didn't compound this with an extra engine, but I thought about it.
