WTB: Intermediate shaft for 1.6D
« on: March 23, 2014, 09:17:50 pm »
Tearing down the mk1 1.6D i discovered that the flange on the front of the intermediate shaft is cracked pretty good.

Looking for a good used replacement.

Please clean up that mech. head you have and send me photos.
We can, perhaps, work out some sort of exchange.
PM me photos.
Thank you.

If no one is going to sell you one, Bryan (nice guy in Oklahoma) over on Ebay has two for sale for $50 shipped. Just do a search.

Otherwise, I can sell you a gasoline int. shaft for $20 (and then a bit more for shipping) and you can try to press off/exchange the gears on the two shafts (gas is gear-cut the opposite direction). I've always wanted to do this to see if it can be done without damaging the gear teeth.

Do yo have access to a press, good patience, and 10 ounces of ingenuity? Well then, THIS is your lucky day!

Hey....if you don't grow some hair....you never learn!

If you decide to throw this old shaft away, I would take it and pay reasonable shipping to see if I can do the swap without damaging it.

I already handed it to my machinist friend to add to his scrap pile. Otoh right now it probably is his scrap pile, since he took a load to the recycler just yesterday morning.

My buddy needed one of these so I shopped around for him.
Found one on the vortex for $20,.. $34 shipped but the guy took forever to ship it.
The guy bought another one form the parts place for $150.
Put it in and when he turned the crank it hit the intermediate shaft gear.
Ha, they sold him a 1.5 I-shaft. The 1.6 has a bevel cut in the gear for crank clearance.
Well by then my $34 shaft had arrived and fit perfectly, patience man.

Lesson is: Make sure someone doesn't try to sell you a 1.5 shaft.
Also curious; was the timing belt tracking way to the outside? I have always seen this with I-shafts with broken flanges but others doubt this is the cause.

The timing belt was not going anywhere strange.

There is however matching damage to the IM pulley - it's the old style with the flange, and the inner flange has a chunk half broken off.

there's a picture of the thrust flange in my build thread over in the indirect forum. Didn't take a picture of the IM pulley.
