1992 Turbo Diesel Jetta Won't Crank/Turn over/ Does nothing.
« on: February 02, 2014, 02:17:32 pm »
The car will start if you jump the starter with a screw driver but it will not start from the key. No power @ terminal 50 on the starter... I think it's terminal 50... The small wire.
We replaced the ignition switch for fun and the seat belt thing was bypassed a million years ago.
The load reduction relay is functioning.
The grounds are all very very clean and nice and tight.

The only thing I question is the seat belt bypass. That was done by the previous owner. However it doesn't even have the same style seat belts anymore. Is it likely this bypass could have been dislodged?

Any other ideas?

The safetard relay that makes it so you have to turn the key full off before restarting...

Wait can that fail? Which relay is it? This is the first I am hearing of it.

I don't know which, all of mine used to quit when it would rain though.
and I'm not necessarily pointing at the relay itself any more than the stuff it attaches to.
None of that junk is designed to last more than 7 years.

Schwak, when you bridge the connection between the small and large wire on the starter, you are bypassing the ignition switch, which serves the same function.

Shorting the connection (screw driver or IGN switch) pulls the bendix (starter drive) to engage the flywheel while the motor starts to spin, starting the engine.

I would start at the ignition switch, which typically suffers from several kinds of failures:

Contacts defective to the starter, resulting in a no-start condition. Try twisting on the key a little harder than normal and it will sometimes force a connection, but the switch would still need replacing.

Engine tries to start, but shuts off when the key is released, because the contacts to the injector pump "run" switch are not engaging.

The injector pump shut-off (or Run switch as some refer to it) switch can fail, inhibiting fuel to the injectors - but the engine will crank over...

Hope this helps.
