Will a mTDI IP work on an AAZ?
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:13:51 pm »
Just wondering in case my IP goes bad, I would like to get a mTDI IP. So that way when my AAZ retires which shouldn't be for a longtime :~ ) I can throw in a TDI... Maybe possible or not...

based on no experience other than discussions here on the forum regarding the rover pump i just traded, I'm gonna say:

Sure. mounting may or may not be direct, but the business end of an ALH or 1Z IP looks very much like what was rolling off the line in 1977.

What MTDI pump? What is the base of the pump made up from?

I'm going to say that it will not work very well.  The timing advance curve is different.  Those parts could be swapped, tho.

I don't have an mTDI pump - I was just wondering if it would work. The IP is pretty much the only thing on my motor that has not been rebuilt. After losing contact with the PO I have no clue on the age of it. So if it was to go bad on me some time soon I would like to replace it with a mTDI pump. So down the road if my AAZ engine ever craps out I could put a TDI long block in it. I couldn't find any info on this so I just wanted to see if it can be done, and if it's worth it?

About how much would it cost to swap those parts?

I'm not sure.  If you can find an advance spring that has the correct rate for the AAZ timing advance and the correct length to fit the mTDI dynamic advance piston then the swap of parts would only take a couple minutes.  If the dynamic advance piston itself needed to be changed then it would be considerably more work, basically a pump rebuild.
