1.6 TD in a Caddy ???
« on: March 18, 2006, 06:58:15 am »
Here's one for y'all. How would I find out production figures for a 1.6 TD Caddy in 1981. A  friend says they were made, though I think not.

i'd like to see proof of that as other TD models didn't appear until 1983 AFAIK.

The first TD was in the Golf MK1 so this is before '83, the TD-engine has never been in the caddy in europe. I don't know about amerika.

For the VW Rabbit Pickup, ETKA only lists CR and JK diesel engine codes (which are naturally aspirated.)  No engine code CY / turbo diesel.

I really doubt ETKA's wrong, given it's a genuine VW of America data source.  Seems to me that should be a lot more reliable than some hearsay on the 'net.

But given there still might be some naysayers on this topic, I managed to dig up yet more evidence supporting the claim that there are zero factory VW turbo-diesel pickup trucks...

In VW of America's pamphlet: "Introductory Service Training Information: The 1983 Rabbits", pages 4-5 give an overview of the Rabbit sedan models (excluding the Rabbit GTI covered in a different section), and it lists four available engine options: the 1.7 fuel injected gasser, 1.7 carburated gasser, 1.6lNA diesel, and 1.6 turbo-diesel.  (The turbo-diesel is also noted as a "new option" for this model year.)  The Pick up model is then overviewed on pages 6-7, but for that model there are only two engine options listed: the 1.7 liter Fuel injected Gasoline and the 1.6l naturally aspirated Diesel as engine options (turbo diesel option is not listed.)

If you need more evidence, someone needs to find a Rabbit Pickup truck owner's manual and report back here if it mentions a turbo-diesel engine option.  (I checked my 1984 owner's manual which does list a turbo-diesel engine option, but it only covers the Rabbit sedan.)

Although you are right that it was 1983 when the 1.6lTD made its first transverse format appearance, it actually was introduced as a longitudinal engine option for the Quantum model back in 1982.

Def. not an option in '81, and I doubt that it ever existed unless it was for someone who knew someone at the westmoreland factory. :)  Anyone with an 83 man?

No TDs overhere either like I wrote above... I linked to doppel wobber only to show that the TD's were in a golf from '81.
