I have a 1.6 NA here, unknown mileage, but it has a faded Vw Factory Rebuild sticker on it. I just pulled one of the rod caps to have a look, and noticed the rod bearing is stamped 07-97, and has the Vw logo. I know the old Chevys had the date of mfg stamped on the rod bearings. Does Vw do this too?
Apparently, some of the parts used in VW authorized rebuild sites utilized date stamps.
That should be somewhat reassuring to you to a certain degree.
The only "tagged" engines (rebuilds) I have ever seen were from the great white nort. Usually cars out of Minnesota.
I've noticed that everything made in Germany comes with some sort of date stamp or code, and I assumed that this was part of some industrial standard used there.
