Cam Sprockets
« on: January 23, 2014, 06:52:44 pm »
Wanting to know if 1.6 diesel and 1.9TD [ aaz ] cam sprockets are the same part? They *look* the same.
I have one of each, but the 1.6 sprocket is in better condition than the 1.9. Can I use this on the aaz?

Thanks.

Same pulley at least back as far as 1985... More checking... Back to 1980 just the one pulley # 069 109 111

being that the cams and timing belts can interchange I would think you could use it even if it did not have the same part #.

thought the taller block had a slightly longer t-belt on the aaz.  Seems like I had to buy a different PN last time.

All I have seen which is only 3 aaz engines and many 1.6L the only difference is the TB tensioner, which takes up the room for the taller block. IIRC there were the older 1.6 style tensioners on some AAZ and then the smaller diameter stud tensioners and then the ahu and I think late aaz had the auto tensioners.

Yes, you can even put mechanical cams in hydro engines, but the ramp opening and closing is wrong from mech to hydro. So if you do there will be valvetrain chatter and it could come apart on you. But any mech engine will take any mech cam and any hydro engine will fit any hydro cam in the vw diesel family.

Hmm, mine has a 1.6 tensioner and an early TDI timing belt on it.  068109243F tensioner which is regular IDI 1.6D and 028109119P belt which is 93-98ish 1.9D AAZ and I think early TDI.
I don't know when the auto tensioner started, I vaguely considered swapping to it but figured if it ain't broke don't fix it.  There might be a smaller tensioner allowing use of the regular 1.6 length
timing belt I suppose.

Just a question that's been on the back of my mind, related to the OP--is anyone aware of an aluminum pulley/sprocket sets for any VW diesel? Seems to me like if it's worth if for the gasser crowd, there should be some gains to be had for us diesel folks as well... I'm thinking of drilling one of the spares I have on hand, once I get a spare chassis as a testbed, whenever that is.

Also, anybody converted to a non-vacuum assist brake setup, and thereby deleted the vacuum pump? Gotta be losing some efficiency there...

Getting rid of the vacuum pump is a challenge. There were some industrial engines that came without pumps, but they are few and far between. The issue is that the oil pump is driven by the vacuum pump, so if you remove it you need "something" to drive the oil pump. That "something" is made from unobtanium.
