i got a buddy that might be getting a vw fox along with a caddy, so the chances of it coming to me cheap are pretty good. even tho my wife cant understand why i like it (wagon and 2 door, what's not to like?) i would definately wanna put a diesel engine in it for my daily commute. I did read a little of one thread talking about the same issue using parts from an audi 4000, but car-part.com wasn't helpful in finding much info, so i had a few questions for the diesel gurus...
1. engine
a. is there a longitudinally mounted 1.6td that was offered in the US that i can use for this swap?
b. is there a 1.6td that can be mounted longitudinally without custom mounts?
2. transmission
a. same as 1a really, is there a longitudinal diesel transmission that will drop into the fox offered in the US?
b. will the stock gasser transmission work with the better-than-tdi revving 1.6l engine? (i still want very good gas mileage though)
3. what cluster would work? mk2? mk1?
4. as far as fueling, can i use most of the gas lines and fuel tank just making a wider opening for the diesel pump to fit in or is there some kind of tak that will fit?
im sure ill have a ton more questions as both concepts are pretty new to me and i dont think the vw fox is a popular candidate for diesel, but these are the major issues i want to address first to see if this swap is even worth thinking about, thanks in advance
shoulda thought of the quantum, thank you for that, thread is very complete from what i can tell so far
There are a few different Fox Diesel Build threads on the vortex
The link above, happens to be for my car
If you have any questions, just ask-but the build thread is pretty complete
2 things I would change is :
use a trans with a lower final drive (mine has a 5M trans with a tall final drive-which helps MPG but Kills the power)
I have a T3 turbo - Which can make plenty of boost-but is slow to spool- I think a smaller turbo would be much better for daily driving
Good luck !
