1.5 injection pump innards same as 1.6???
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:03:40 pm »
Hey Everyone,

I was in the process of resealing my injection pump when I snapped the black spring retaining collar in half(see #56: the piece he is holding on to http://gnarlodious.com/vanagon/bosch_pump/-Rebuild#98). I found am IP from a 1.5l jetta/dasher for a decent price and am curious if the insidie parts are relatively the same size? I just need that rectangular black collar. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Justin

Should work, I haven't noticed any difference in the piece you need.

The plunger and head are a machined matched set, so those cannot just be swapped around if you had the thought.

If the external bits are the same for whatever is on your 1.5 pump, the 1.6 pump should run the engine just fine.

I had a 1.5 pump on 85 jetta engine for months just to see if it worked, and I didn't notice any difference?  Only took the pump off because it started leaking.

Yeah I have heard that any pump will work with just about any car, my query is whether the internals are the same size between the pumps on the 1.5 vs the internals on a 1.6. Found the actual name for the part here (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=45870) the link element #6 in the first picture.

Thanks

My apologies for not being clear. I was tightening down the distributor head and did not have the little ball on the bottom of the tension lever set inside the hole on the side of the collar that sits on the shaft, I rested the the little ball on the front of the collar and tried to tension the distributor head down and the tension from the plunger return springs snapped the link element in half. So I am looking for a broken or for parts injection pump so I can harvest the link element (which is hopefully the same size between just about every bosch ve 1.5l-1.6l) out of a 1.5l IP and replace the broken link element in my 1.6l IP.

Ja, I think if the plunger diameter is the same, the link should work. I'd check the number on the pump case...

0 460 494 161
The "9" is the plunger diameter.

(FWIW, I rekon the plunger, head and control-collar are all matched to each other.)

Do you know the number of the link element it's self? would it be possible to just order one from NAPA or does it seem that I will have to get a whole other pump? Tyler...the number you threw up 0 460 494 161 is that an injection pump part number or something else?

That's an IP number. It's stamped on the side of the IP body near the HP head.

If you can find the part from a Bosch shop it might cost more than a parts-pump... a friendly shop might sell you just that bit, but it might usually only come with the HP head.

That's fine, I picked up a 1.6 rabbit pump for parts on ebay this morning. We shall see if it works. A couple more questions, is the shaft that attaches to the accelerator spring/bracket etc pressed into the top of the housing? What is the safest way of removing the governor spring assembly? Thread the nut on top and tap it with a ball peen i assume. Also with the governor mod, when we talk about shimming the main spring, there is no cutting involved correct? I purchased 6 M4 washers, I just slide the washers over the shaft and compress the main spring on top of them right? I didn't want to go balls out with the governor mod, just shim it a quarter of an inch or so to put a bit of pep in my golf's step, Jeremy, what say you?

Thanks,
Justin
