I am looking for a diesel for my friend.Looking at spending around $600 or less.Needs to have a good engine and if it needs work thats fine.A auto trans would be grate but a stick is ok.Looking in and cloes to ohio.Thanks

If you are interested in an 86 golf, I will have one soon, and I'm in Ohio, may not be the fanciest thing, but would be ato transportation, how much work are you interested in doing? 600 bucks usually doesn't get you much when it comes to diesels vehicles.

This would be for a friend.Iam looking around for one for him so i will run what ever info i get by him and get more form him.As far as work a good engine and trans other things are ok if there not to bad.As for work on a engine or trans glow plugs would be cool not hard to do at all,not looking to rebuild a engine right now or any time soon.My friend needs a car to get to work and back.Also could you give me more info about that Golf?Thanks

I agree,$600 won't get you much but a starter project,will probably need some serious work.

I have lots of good used diesel runners,and I'll be down in Erie PA next month.Maybe I could bring one down.Probably looking more than $600 though.

I'm not familiar with pricing,or what may be available in your area.

Up here,a beat up,worn out,barely running MKII NA diesel will still fetch $6-700.A good running MKII TD car in good shape will sell for $2000 or more.

MKIII's range from $2500-6500 for a decent running car,depending on mileage and condition.

Looks about the same for a good runing one in good shape,as for the beat up ones not sure i got mine for $170 and it was runing but need some work.Still not on the road yet starter went out.

Another option is finding a clean gas car,and convert it.Conversions are pretty easy,as most everything is plug and play.1.6L NA's are fairly plentyful,and cheap and easy to repair.

I did one this week.Mint 89 Jetta I picked up for $350.Ripped out the dead 1.8L,dropped in the 1.6 NA (good used motor bought cheap),and now it will easily fetch $1500-2000.I threw new rings and bearings in the 1.6,and redid the head.
