1.6D to 1.6TD -- injection pump modifications?

So I'm going to turbo convert the 1.6D in my '84 jetta when i rebuild it.

Mind you, I still haven't laid hands on the vehicle itself. I still need to tow it home. I just bought it from someone reputable, someone who knows a lot of the same people i do, for not much money.

In the pictures and video, the IP is very, very shiny and the PO indicates that the guy he bought it from replaced the pump. Replaced a lot of things actually running away from the reality that the bottom end needs rebuilt.

I understand that the non-turbo IPs don't have the ability to increase fuel with boost. Am i correct in that?

What are the most basic changes i can make? Do i need a different pump or just some different parts on the existing pump?

Technically, yes but neither do turbo pumps.  Turbo pumps  have the ability to limit fuel while off boost.

is this a modification that someone with above average attention to detail and manual dexterity can make at home with a few donor parts, or do i have to send the pump to someone?

I think you could do it. IIRC you need to trim a pin that is a stop on the inside of the N/A pump.

I've converted several.  You need the aneroid lid from a turbo pump.  The method I use is to pull the lid.  Next remove the governor shaft, gear and flyweight assembly.  Use a punch to drive the pin into the pump until it pops out.  Chuck the pin in a drill and use a dremel with cutoff wheel to cut it to the length that will let it install flat to the pump body.  Press the shortened pin back into place using a C-clamp to plug the hole.  Replace the governor parts and install the new lid.  Install, test and tune...
