It will do, but it's not the best choice.

For one thing, Mobil 1 here in North America is not available in a 10w40, so better recheck that viscosity.

For another, it does not meet the latest standards for diesel engines.

Canadian Tire has Shell Rotella Synthetic 0w40, which meets the required diesel standards for your engine and is an appropriate viscosity.

PetroCanada OilChangers and distributors can get PetroCanada Duron Synthetic 5w40, which is another good choice. Watch out with this, there are several variations of Duron, you need the Synthetic 5w40 version. It might need to be special ordered in advance, but they can get it.

VW dealers have a special version of Castrol Syntec which is 5w40 and meets VW 505.00, suitable for your engine.

You can also use *any* oil that meets the newer VW 505.01 standard, including those from Elf, Motul, and VW dealers. Shops and distributors that specialize in VW cars should all have, or can get, these oils.

oils for tdi's

the oil most people use is the Mobile 1 Truck & SUV. It was available in 5qt container for ~$20 at walmart until recently in a 5w-40 form..

Mobile is now breaking up the Truck and SUV into two new Truck & SUV oils 5w-30 (for gas) and the 5w-40 (for turbo diesels).

If you go to Walmart right now you will only see the 5w30 weight. Mobile said in a announcment that you probably won't see the reformulated turbo diesel variety until mid march-april.  Use the Shell Rotella for now and then switch to the Truck & SUV (Turbo Diesel) later.

If you have a newer '04 and onward pd diesel engine you'll want to use a different oil.  go the the fuel and lubricant section of tdiclub.com and you'll be an expert in no time.. :)

Of course, if we knew what part of the world you were inquiring from, you might receive more accurate local assistance.
I'm uncertain my PC supplier in London would be of any significant value to you... this is a Canadian forum so you're in Canada right   :P

I run DEO synthetic from Caterpillar.
It's readily available from Caterpillar dealers, and
it's rebranded Delvac1.

Used to be Mobil1 Truck and SUV 5-40 Synthetic was the stuff to use.

Mobil1 recently "reformulated" their Mobil 1 Synthetic Line.

Now Mobil1 Truck and SUV is "5-30 for Gasoline Engines"

The new 5-40 (which is delvac1 synthetic) is Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40

Still waiting for my local Wally World to get the  TDT 5-40 in. I used Shell Rotella-T 5-40 Synthetic on my last oil change.
