Pulley misalignment

After replacing my water pump on my 84 rabbit 1.6D, I only now months later am noticing that the crank pulley and the water pump pulley do NOT align, and i cannot for the life of me figure out why. the water pump pulley actually is what seems to be maybe 3/16" of an inch inward, of the crank pulley.
Nothing changed at all upon taking it apart. Its not bad enough to make the belt walk off or anything, however it does make the belt slap around alot even when its tight.  Does anyone know why this may be happening?

sounds like you are not sure if this problem was there before you touched it?

time to start checking part numbers and matching things up, which can be a very annoying job because the diesel and gas stuff is different.  also some early cars had a 40mm hub instead.

The problem wasnt there before i touched it. the water pump i installed was a bosche, verified correct part number like 2 times before i installed it, and matched it up perfectly when i took the old one off. Is there some sort of spacers that go behind the crank pulley?

I would check the crank sprocket to make sure it's not backing off the crank snout.

How could i check this? i was going to epoxy one washer behind each of the holes on the water pump pulley on the back.
Its so slight, that this would fix it.

I tried this once and even though I used washers from the same packet, it introduced a wobble for me so I backed off and never tried again?

I would still try and find the part numbers stamped on your pulleys, then put it into google just to cross reference to shed some light.

If the problem didn't exist before than it would be your water pump, maybe the shaft isn't pressed on the right amount?

Theirs a long and short pump, with two different pulleys (common, atleast)

Did you reference the part# ON the pump, or just the box? NEVER trust the box, some *** may have returned a wrong pump in a wrong box (happens)


I was lucky enough to have both pulleys laying around, never worried about it!

Sounds like a simple matter of the pump being pressed together a little too much at the production or rebuild site. Seen it before.

Yes sir I have encountered this as well... It is a real problem. I always match up the original. Make no assumptions about the products you buy. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your responses. being as this isnt posing a HUGE problem at the moment. Its on the back burner until i can figure out where my MASSIVE coolant leak is coming from, and why my car is running aweful. However, once i fix those two issues i will be getting right back on this with all the options you've all listed above.
