sounds like you are not sure if this problem was there before you touched it?time to start checking part numbers and matching things up, which can be a very annoying job because the diesel and gas stuff is different. also some early cars had a 40mm hub instead.
I would check the crank sprocket to make sure it's not backing off the crank snout.

Sounds like a simple matter of the pump being pressed together a little too much at the production or rebuild site. Seen it before.
