intercooler sensor install.
« on: December 01, 2013, 07:41:15 am »
I'm finally getting around to installing  air temp sensors for my Vanagon AAZ with Saab 900 intercooler in the drivers D Pillar.  The sensors that came with my gauge have 3/8Npt thread.   My IC piping is 2" aluminum and Silicone connectors.  The Saab 900 IC is one with plastic tanks.

What's the best locations and methods for installing these sensors?  Thanks,  Paolo.

I would weld a bung in the aluminum or if you want to see if it holds and doesn't leak I would reduce it down to 1/8 pipe andthread it into the aluminum tubing.

If your intercooler piping is thin aluminum, it takes a lot of skill plus the right equipment (TIG) to weld a bung on. Forget about tapping 3/8 NPT into thin aluminum tubing. You cannot reduce 3/8 NPT to 1/8 NPT, you can expand it but you don't really want to do that as the mass and leverage of the contraption from vibration will break the tubing in short order.

I thought Grainger had bushings or reducers that took you from 3/8's to 1/8 inch.  No?
