MK-1 Speedometer
« on: November 12, 2013, 07:00:54 am »
My speedometer reads correctly, my odometer is skipping 2/10s every 10 miles on trip and ODO.  Will be using my spare  unit as a replacement, and want to purchase another spare.
Looking for a low mileage spare unit, for a diesel, circa 1981.

german or westy? cruise or not, screw on or clip on cable?

81 should be screw on... but still german vs westy... and in 82 german went clip style unless kph which i guess is still screw on..

so lots of choices with too little info given... my 43k has broken gear.. 81 german.. broken from heat/age.. not milage..

Screw on cable.  Car was made in Westmoreland, PA.  Miles with Kilometers in background smalll.
current speedo's max speed is 85, but higher acceptable.

BTW:  looked up the cost of the gears, from post above.  ouch on price, and for the guy doing the task for the first time, not enough detail to make a one part choice.

well 25$ each.. 2 gears... but vs nla speedo head.. or sending it off to be rebuilt is 100$min.. 25$ - 50$ to fix fo rlong time good.. but gotta rember its considered odo tampering to install them.. why they are the only ones who sell gear5s.. its kinda against the law.. i rember when you coul dbuy the gears from places like vw for $30 a gear back in the 80s... then gov prevented sales to garages and such.. that place popped up one day.. and is a source..

overseas speedo in tx is who we have had rebuilding them since the 80s law... but it is 100$ min back then.. been long time since i used them.. http://www.speedometer.com/  if you wanna pay someone..

you got spare speedo... count the teeth of the gears.. a crack is a crack.. but tooth count is what matters... i was pre teen in 80s when i was doing this on customer cars.. its not that hard.. just do following trick before reinstalling..

using a drill and a piece of old speedo cable.. drill needs to be run in reverse.. you can calibrate it.. i did back in 94 for my whats in my 84 coupe.. when you pull the speedo you will see a few white tick marks for when the needle is at rest on the wrong side of the peg.. should line up at rest... but if it off using said tick mark you can move the needle 1 way or the other b y popping it off and repositioning it.. this will allow you to count miles so on... i always ran them past 10 miles to make sure nothing else slipped... the load of tuning from 9 to 10 miles is where they start to fail..

no i do not tamper with speedo heads for others... or ones i resell.. why ill sell with broken gears with link...

but my face is wrong fo ryour goal..

you need westy 81-84 peedo head.. rember 84 is 100-120mph depending on if gas vs diesel..and i find those ones to be off way more in speed then a 85mph one..  im just saying there is no such thing as a good used one anymore..

over on poortx i saw some one use a tablet to replace the cluster.. looked neet... ideas for my jack rabbit... but ive decided big tach.. and hour meter with fuel gauge is all it realy needs... gps for mph...

There is a guy in Baltimore that rebuilds them for $79, but won't guarantee his work.  I have taken them apart and fixed them, but I have OTHER projects backed up in my shop with parts on hand and I view this as poor time investment.  I may just go digital.  Hell, I have changed and upgraded the wheels, engine, tranny, added power steering, cruise control, uprated the headlamps, digital bulbs, and more so whats the worry about it being original.  I know I may have to drop the fuel tank and install a sender, but really, its do-able.

But if someone has a good unit, I take it on as a spare.

Dog Diesel,  Let me check the closet of unused parts.  I think I have what you need from my 81 Rabbit.  I can picture it tomorrow but being way too late and need to be up early in the morning.  give me till after 5 PM west coast time.  Can PM if that works better.
