you dont make the mk4 alt work..
that alternator is WAY too different to fit your car without doing a full-on serpentine conversion...

Your original problem may be as simple as the voltage regulator and/or brushes. Very common stuff.

You should just be able to go to any parts store and ask for a voltage regulator and they should be able to get it, the voltage regulator has the brushes attached and it is the same for a lot of european cars of the era that used Bosch alternators.

Usually, it is a matter of the brushes. And, O'Reilley's has sold me brushes (in the past) which can then be carefully soldered into the existing volt. regulator. If that does not interest you, Autohausaz.com can fix you up with a replacement regulator.
Whatever you do, don't throw the old one away...esp. if it is a Bosch. You might decide to repair it later or send it to me to have!

how did the alternator shaft bearings feel?
were they very loose?
if your bearings get too wasted, it will eat thru brushes, and charge erratically..
sounds like your bearings werent that bad tho, being that everything works again!

Did you happen to inspect/look at the slip rings that the brushes ride on (as the shaft rotates)? They are copper and tend to groove their surfaces over time....etching away at the brush faces. In other words...no longer smooth.
I was going to suggest you look at those but did not want to overload you too much for fear that you night not forge ahead to try a new regulator. If the brushes burn down again.....this is probably the case.
A guy can use some 400 grit (or smaller) paper on your finger, loosen the alt. belt, and use your other hand to rotate the shaft (at the pulley) to "sand them down" very lightly to smoothen them back out. But, you don't want to remove too much of the copper as they wear out eventually.
My stuff is such high mileage stuff that I have to do crap like this. Maybe your rig is fresher. Anyway....good for you.

300 000km on mine not sure if the alternator is original or not. To be honest I just swaped the unit without inspecting anything else. It's freezing here now in ottawa ontario canada. One of the old brushes was hanging on by just the spring doing its own thing.
