Engine compatability
« on: September 28, 2013, 07:24:30 pm »
I have an opportunity to scoop a very clean '95 diesel Golf with no engine/transaxle for free. I already have a 1.6 TD (MF) engine from a type 2 Jetta ('90) and wonder what sort of mods I will have to do? Is it just a matter of finding the right transaxle?

Cheers!

It is a matter of engine mounts.

Yes, I figured that much. But in what way? From what I have found so far it looks as though it is only the rear transaxle mount that is different(?) Will a type 2 transaxle already have the needed mount points on it for the type 3 mount, or do I have to use a transaxle from a type 3? The mounts, engine and transaxle are all missing on this car so I will have to scoop those from the wrecker and a local parts supplier out here. (AVR Imports in Abbotsford)

Thanks.

You need to get away from calling them Type 2 and Type 3 ;)

Type 2

Type 3

Mk1, Mk2.. Or A1 and A2.. Lol not a big deal, just so that people will know definitively what you are talking about.

I am thinking the mk2 and mk3 transmissions use a similar mount on the transmission side, it is only the body side that may be different. You need the mount for the specific body, most transmissions accept all of them with the exception of some. You'd need to check that first.

Thanks. That is exactly what I needed to know. And I will in future use the correct nomenclature when referencing models. I should know better as I used to own a type 2 myself! ('78)

Man, I would give my left nut for that type 3... Quite possibly my all time favourite car.

I've got an MF in a '94 so any questions you might have I should be able to help with. The mounting brackets need to be the Mk3 versions but the 1990 engine and transaxle will have the correct bolt holes.

The rear engine mount is definitely different on the mk2 vs mk3. The power steering pump will give you some troubles but nothing serious.

Front and rear engine mount brackets are different, but both will bolt to either an AAZ or an MF.  The power steering pump is different, but the MF power steering pump will run the Mk3 power steering rack fine.  The Mk3 hoses will connect to the Mk2 pump.
