Well that really sucks.

What about pre-OBD cars? How are they tested these days?

I believe they are still tailpipe tested as i had to look into that when i did my swap. My golf is a 1996.5, i was lucky enough to get obd1, but the car had the beginings of obd2 in it. From what i've heard from other people, pre obd2 diesels will just get the stare test, i go for my first e test in my swap in 2015

You have a lot of work into this.. What are your plans? I would convert it to a tdi like Chris said wouldn't be much work compared to what you did thus far... oh and sell me that vnt setup  ;D

i actually said long block as aaz block no work... so would expect tdi pistons... but pan, turbo,m intake all bolt on same exact.. so little wiring and your set...

this is why i suggest b3 for idi/tdi-m swaps... and if the shell is newer then 97.. has to be electric..

cali tests 98 and up diesels and stare test the rest... i use them as a basis as if thats how they are.. no one can be worse... now in cali if you carb it as a diesel, as long as the engine is older then 98 and the shell they tend to miss tdi-electric... still get stare test.. but if you told them the tdi is newer then 98.. you will get e test.. from that day forward...

makes it hard on us gas to diesel swap persons... but 97 and older what ever ya want...

98 newer.. standards on diesels sold on that day... need piss filter.. better have it... why its cheaper to buy vs build newer stuff...    sadly only 2 b5 tdi passats made it here... and the 2.0 pd junk they sold here in 04+ is well junk... so in theory.. no good passat diesel option ever after the b4..

m yes... no crank position area milled out on aaz... if you want to work thru that and get it machined and a star wheel for the crank... think tdi block and crank be easier... for a e car..

IMO, crank sensor is easier to solve if you go a little outside the box.  Could probably mount it to the front of the crank and read the four crank pulley bolts.  If it's irritated by the one eccentric bolt or from reading the mass rather than the lack, then drill four equally spaced holes in the pulley and read those or read the ring gear teeth and condition the signal down to 4 per rev.  It's probably easier to just drop in a longblock, tho.
