Well, I have the whole thing back together and all seems to be functioning properly.
I made a trip around the block to a friend's house. Long story short, the pump timing is still way off and I need to work on that (which reminds me...I need to get a dial indicator adapter).
It is ok when cool, but once it starts going, it bogs down and then stalls. I have to keep the Cold Start all the way out....just a little off!!!!
Other than that, it felt darned great to drive that thing around if only for a few minutes!!!
Mikey
That's awesome, Mikey...congrats!
But not to worry, you'll be stylin in a day or two!
I was a bit torqued....I went to a "buggy" show in the next town over and they had a few water cooleds....only 3 A1's. I could have entered the Caddy and won at least 3rd....that's if I could keep it running!!!!
Now to work out that timing issue.
Any suggestions?
Mikey
Got a couple suggestions.
1. Get the proper tool. Then set it to 1.00mm advance and be done with it.
or...
2. If you don't have the timing tool, you could still try advancing it a little bit at a time. It's not that hard to do. Recommend making some way of recording where you set it at and note how the engine responds to the change. You could probably get it reasonably close after 2 or 3 attempts. From the sounds of your description of the behavior of the motor right now, it sounds like the injection timing is too retarded, so you could try advancing it a little bit. Remember there are 2 nuts and 2 bolts on the pump mounting bracket that need to be loosened in order to rotate the pump.
Jake,
Amazingly enough, I picked up the "proper tools" at the Buggy show for an amazing $40.
As Hayden Chasteen and Loren Baird pointed out on the Yahoo groups, I forgot to have my cold start pushed in all the way. I will re-do it again tonight with the cold start in, then set to 1.00 and then take her for another spin. We'll see how that does.
Thanks for the advice though.
Mikey
Mikey,
Which "yahoo group" do you refer to? I'm trying to get connected with all possible information/discussion occurring regarding VW diesels, but I couldn't find any way to access a Yahoo VW diesel group. More info please? Thanks, and sorry for jacking the thread...
Well, after finding out that a bad banjo fitting washer was the culprit to my fueling issues, I replaced it, primed the pump...and took off around the neighborhood again.
The good news...it's alive!!!!! It made it all around the neighborhood just fine!!! I love this thing!. I can't wait to have it tagged and drive it on a daily basis. I felt more comfy driving it than do my Ford Ranger.
Time to replace the windshield (won't pass safety inspection with the chip in front of my face), get the one blown bulb replaced in the cluster, then it's on to inspection, tags, and daily driving!!!!
Then....body repairs, paint, and more and more fun.
I hope to enter it in a local show on the 18th of September that's local....I'll get it there with some old tags I have...and see what reactions I get.
Can anyone else tell how happy I am?
Mikey
