b3/b4 brake upgrade, mk2-mk3 can look..
« on: August 17, 2013, 01:59:51 pm »
for bbob and gimp...

your b3 brake upgrades...

nice pads.. front and rear...

now.. 4x100 (say corrado g60) or 5x100 (say vr6)... pair of rotors for bolt pattern needed

caliper carriers for 11" rotors, come off 5x100 cars or corrados..

fronts done....................... same caliper used..................

rear.. no good upgrade.. i suggest high dollar rotors like ate that no longer imported to usa.. bosch and few others make them.. but they rust way less then the others you can buy.. well worth the extra $ they cost...

we have been working on like 290mm brake upgrades for a2/b3/mk3 platforms halfassed for a while. They are off of a mini cooper s john cooper works edition. They are 4x100 and have gotten them to fit on the front just need to work on getting the caliper bracket machined. Rears are a little different but working on them too. But you will have to run like a 16" wheel to clear them.

I think I have a few sets of 5x100 vr6 front and rear suspension laying around the house or on cars. I have some corrado brakes and some girling g60 calipers too.

yea there is a mixup a lot of times when you hear g60 calipers. Corrado g60 calipers refer to the motor and not the caliper. the caliper is a girling g54. girling g60 calipers come on audi 5000 and some audi v8 cars

thats whats on front of kubvan... mark had them on his 16v passat 3 months before it got totaled... roddo sizes... 11.0" but wiith mintex thy squeek like hell... but little wear...

you really need to find a set of bosch or ate super rotors... think bosch under a "premium" type of name.. but the key to them is they are shipped in NO OIL... your not supposed ot use anything on them to clean them... screws up the finish or something.. they do not rot thru... ive put them on a few non vw cars.. last set came from o' rileys... why i tell you those stores have them...

the problem is the cheap garbage rotor metal rot from inside out on the back... good non packing oil kind are a better steel and do not seem to do this... hince 2x a set o fpads like ate get you are well worth the extra... else every 3-4 years you gotta throw away the crap junk rotor and start over... the ones i put on the b4 back in 09 when i built it besides the skim of rust from sitting all these months in grass.. look better then the 4 year old ones on my wagon... wagon has rot scaling alredy that will screw up the bits to get them recut... rust scale bad...

hell the ate rotors out lasted the rear bearings... last time i rode in the b4 i wasin its back seat thinkng damb it.. gotta redo them before i went to cali.. which is when it got totaled.. :P we had put the cabby in storage.. was going to redo them with dec maintence/snows...

once i get my handbrake cables ill put the ate ones on my wagon... as i have good set of calipers 1st time ever that the section works on... :P was auto wagon.. so its handbrake never worked since i got it.. :P pissing away 400$ for handbrake seems like a waste.. 100 in cables.. 300 in calipers... b4 = free except cables.. and i have the receipt for the life warentee on them..

Also have to think. Im in the south less rust.. Rears Im less concerned about spending big bucks on.. I think I'm gonna just go autozone ceramic pads and duralast rotors anything will be better than what I have on it right now i think the pads only grab on like and inch on the inside close to the hub. Cant find super 8 anywhere anyhow.

salt has nothing to do with it.. its a tempature, water thing... dura trash rotors.. under 3 years till it cheeze grades the pads...

the way water, temps, brake pressure is to rear disks in the issue... poor quality metal rots... you do not get this issue up front.... only on rears....

Actually there are 2 different Girling 54s.  The caliper for an early VR6 is different than one for a TDI B4.

The 11" rotor is 2mm thicker than the 10" rotor and the early VR6 caliper is slightly wider to fit new pads and rotor.  I guess if you're using used rotors and/or pads, you won't have an issue.

I just went to 11" brakes and didn't notice any real difference. Better may be better, but I don't think it's hugely noticeable.   11" brakes will likely require 15" wheels, which would be another expense.
