Painting Exhaust

Well, I've put off the electrical for the weekend and have become side-tracked on the exhaust.
I was going to mount the dual oil filter but realized where I was planning on mounting it may interfere with the exhaust muffler.

The thing was coated from oil leaking at the turbo so I went over it with a wire brush. Now I'd like to paint it and my questions is, does it get hot enough to require high temp paint or will standard rattle can paint work?

Definitely too hot for rattle can, i used vht exhaust header paint in the color white. So that i feel like i have an old hot rod haha

I know the manifold is too hot for sure. I'm thinking the pipe would be quite a bit cooler - just not sure if it's still too hot for anything less than the high temp stuff. Not trying to be cheap - just too busy to go get more paint. I already have silver and plack but it's standard enamel I think.

I would do the high temp. If your pre turbo egt are 1200f and the turbo cools it to 1/2 that which I think it might not even do that much that is still about 400f more than the normal rattle can will handle. I used high temp on my down pipe which is longer than yours and most of it melted off still. If you can get the ceramic based stuff that you are supposed to bake in an oven or have it powder coated that works best.

I painted my home made downpipe with some black glossy chassis paint - POR-15 I had kicking around. So far it is sticking, although it had gone from glossy black to matte in sheen. This is after about 2000km of driving.

I had great results with POR-15 on my Tr6 frame - was really durable even after 5 years of all weather driving. ( wasn't so good to get off my skin)

I'd expect a sustained 900F post turbine which is way too much for regular paint

A trip to the FLAPS and nine bucks netted this:

All they had was flat grey and clear.




Glad I installed it before mounting the dual filter unit. It would have dumped right on it changing filters. Now I need to get a single filter unit. Probably a better idea anyhow.
