crank looks to be fine. Just from what I can see with it in the block still. What should I be looking for?

Ill look at it closer tomorrow in the light. Assuming the crank looks good, what parts do I need to be looking for? I am thinking a set of Pistons/conn rods, bearings, gaskets. What else should I do while its all apart?

if piston undamaged id throw rod, bearings, rings in it...
or 1 used piston if needed too.. but it locked up.. so you gotta really look good at things lik eim shaft which requires removing the block to get it out.. if mk1.. remove rear engine mount in mk2 will get it out.. but if the main cap area of block go tsmacked.. id worry it may poke a hole down the road like aaz seem too..

Did you put that one rod bolt back in the cap? If not, then they were installed backwards...
There's no way I'd run that block without getting it magnafluxed and if going to that trouble, I'd just replace it. There's cheap and then there's so cheap that it gets really expensive.

that makes crank junk too... the blue edge.. its ruined.. there has to be a matching blue spot on the crank..
went looking for libby question pic bout bolt..
if that was #3 and your vw mfg duel op lights did not work right.. lost oil pressure fast and spun #3 rod.. guy changes oil in car fri.. adds slick 50 to it.. sends his wife to store.. towed to me as 1 of 2 things happened.. fram oil filter junk, or slick 50 plugged it up.. had oil in the pan still.. but the rod blew the auto starter off the back of the block
ahhh young memories guy was state piggy
if it was say low pressure for long time.. idiot light system killed/did not exist.. they tend to spin #1 and #2 mains.. too thin oil stuff like that

I'll be looking closely at the crank and im shaft today when home from work. I will try to get some good pictures of it to post up for you all. BTW this is #1. Oil lights work normally. Oil light came on as I pushed in the clutch and engine died. No indications previously. Only Mann oil and air filters for me. Ran a fram once when 1st bought her and quickly discovered they were junk. Replaced it with a Mann filter 250 miles later. Also only run Rotella, changed, every 2500-3500 miles.

ive never see #1 rod fail... ever... i think the stud broke...
crank is trash... look 1/2 way up rod at how the blue edge grew the heat up the rod to the point the rod bent...
but #1.. may miss im shaft and block stout there vs the other 3... but the crank is scrap.. look at how rod was riding unstraight on the crank to blue edge it...

I have blue on some of my rods that were fine and on the crank. Some of that could be the paint from the factory as that is what mine is. Being forged they are induction heat tempered and there is bluing from that too. I wouldn't assume it is junk, I would get it checked out.

Took a look and this is what I could see.
Not sure if the pics will show but there is a spot that is obviously where the rod smacked into the crank.
I am worried about the heat on the rod/crank. As well as any unseen damage to the block where the rod smacked the cylinder.
I'd hate to put her back together only to have a more catastrophic failure.
Leaning towards finding another block or motor and getting it in the car then later having this one magnafluxed and if good rebuild and have for later.
Your thoughts?

Btw looks as though rod hitting the side of the cylinder stopped it short of hitting the im shaft. Didnt take any pics of it but no marks on it at all.

This is not even a 1.6TD. Save the intermediate shaft and the other three rods and recycle the rest or use it as a planter/boat anchor.
