Well my starter died on me today after i find out why it was hard starting my car.The car is a 1986 Golf 2door with a 1.6N/A 5speed.Now my question is would everyone like me to do a wright up on the tear down and rebuild of my starter? It was ingage but not turn at all and it turns freely.I am going to replace the brush set. Most of my friends think that is the problme and it worked fine and then just didn't anymore.I did the testing form the Bentley which say that fit i get less then 8V's at the brushes in the start poshion the starter is bad and when it was working i got about 9. something. If you guys like i will do a wright up on it and take pics too and name out all the parts to the best of my knowlage. But i do have dail up  so the pics will take some time and i will need help hosting them.My reason in the frist place for doing all this work is well iam poor lmao and i do not have $100 to get a new starter but i can get the $20 for the brushes and well i can learn something new.So let me know what you guys thing and any help where i might find the brushes for a good price would be grate. Thanks
well here is the bosch part#0 001 110 014 and the VW's parts#176 914 023
I was able to track down aftermarket brushes at an auto/electric place in Seattle for $20. Waaaay cheaper than buying from the VW Dealer!

you could try to find a small local starter/alternator rebuild shop and see if he'll cut you a deal for cash. i've done that in the past with a small shop dealing with mostly vw but other german cars as well and he did it cheap, showed me every part of the process step by step. was money well spent.
or try getting a used one from someone local. i have a couple but makes no sense to ship. then your car will run while you can rebuild the other.
Well it work one time and dead for good nothing works on it now  so now i have to come up $96 for a new starter.Anyone looking for a brush set like one in the link?
yo,,ihave one of those starters,,and its problem is the wire that goes from the solenoid to the brushes inside the case,,on the outside of the case,i touched it one day,and it turned to dust,,,i dont know how the car was starting ,,,,,,do i need this whole brush set? i bet the lead is soldered/welded on,,,,i would like to fix this since my old a1 huge dieselstarter is giving me some bendix problems, and id rather swap to the a2 style
Yes it is solder or spot welded on.I do have a new brush set i installed but lol and it still did not work come to find out the solenoid is bad so iam going to try to get the money for a new starter so the brush set is up for sale.I am just looking to get back out of it what i payed for it which is $30.
