I had to post this after I almost killed my car today.  I didn't even think about this until I was forced to pull over.  Thought it could be fuel filter but I had a couple nasty stumbles when stabbing the pedal and just knew it was different.  Got a day of nasty rain out of nowhere in the bay area.  I was able to cheat and flip the lid with zip ties just to get home so I am guessing I didn't do damage?

Box full of water, filter soaked and a puddle of water in the intake where oil usually collects!

I did this to my rabbit one day just because I had the parts and wanted to get it on the road and have been driving it for months like this.  I thought having the inlet exit the engine bay was a good thing and tried to mimic the setup in the 85.

I also planned to revisit the engine later.  Lots of people tell me I should intercool, etc. to my rebuilt motor which is all stock right now.

    I have a VW problem.
It's been a long time since I had  Rabbit... I guess they don't have a plastic wheelhouse.  :(


I recently forgot to replace the raintray in a parts Jetta, filled the passenger footwells via the AC airbox in one night. XD

m b3 w/inner fenders... cone filter up behind headlight.. bent rod going thru silly no water puddle vs the ones i hit over and over 2 hr prior... and im serious.. it was no water.. just a stream/flow across tilted pavemnt.. like garden hose amount... kid ya not.. bent rod...

How do you know you didn't bend it before?? lol. Were you in the crank case when it happened? ;)

DAMAC, If it still starts and runs fine.. I'd say you got LUCKY BRO! Good idea, poor execution is all. The mk1's do have an inner fender, but the water is not 100% blocked by it I do not believe.

when your great running drops a hole... and smokes like weedwacker... it pretty easy to go.. wow.. that stalled my engine... and now its a 3 banger... happened at my fav stopsign... .5 mile from home... i limped it that last half mile...

this was monday/tues of katerna hurrican that flooded the dome all them years back.. the water puddles i hit prior in the evening should have done damage this peeazly little stream caused...

rod hangs on my wall... pull head was easy to see the "stroked bore"..

I totally knew better, I can't understand why I even started the car.  I do some really stupid things sometimes when I get tired.

With the airbox bottom flipped I had to zip tie it closed, but it made it 90 miles home in the rain.  Not allot of water splashes up to the timing belt cover I guess.

Drove it hard as ever without a stumble and could hear the turbo again.

I could drive my old f250 in the rain all day with the cowl intake.  That bastard was loud, but I guess its because with the drains clear that area could take allot of water in and not be high enough to spill over into the intake tube.
