Transmission missing shift at times

What would cause my 020 transmission to shift into reverse instead of first? As I come up to a light in third I come to a complete stop push in the clutch and bring it out of that gear and up into what seems to be first. If I don't play the clutch a bit to verify I am in first I may end up backing into the car behind as I get the green light to go.
I have been under this car tweaking the position of the rod that goes from the shift lever up to the firewall. At times it works great then all of a sudden I am doing a reversal at the light again. Is my linkage worn? I don't think so. Is the there an adjustment on the transmission that will increase the amount of push downward I need to do to make it go into reverse?
Looking to save the lights and a paint job. Let me know what you know on this one. DAS

The adjustments are all in the shifter, and the piece that holds the ball in its grasp.
Weird that it is all over the place.

Unless it is something silly like that little ear that keeps you from hitting reverse on the shifter is broken.

Yeah ours are mk1, those bushings just make slop in the shifter when in gear or in neutral. you can move the stick while in gear a fair amount but shouldnt hinder shifts to much.. I've had one shift well without those bushings present haah..
Also because they are mk1, the reverse lockout is thick gauge steel and is part of the shifter bolted to the tunnel. Unlikely it has broken off.

mk2 right?? the ball at bottom of shift rod, the cup, and the plastic lock out wear.. then no longer lock out.. ball wears try lifting shifter up to see the play the ball has..

Shift mechanism and car are MK1 1981 Aug just before Model change year. I will try to see about the ball and socket at the end of the shifter as that is the only thing I can think of that I haven't torn into as of yet. I do know that one of the riveted balls on the linkage mechanism is loose from time to time. I have peened it tight several times so perhaps it is torch time. All the bushings are in great shape. In fact those two you showed with the link are so passe, I found brass ones at the hardware store that were like just a tad tight so I ran some emery paper in the holes on a dowel and that shaft is tight up solid in the bracket. No slop there. The rubber ball is good, the plastic caps are nice and round and all lock on the riveted balls. So, I think CRS is the fix to try. What else do I have to do that will keep me out of the rain? Inside job at that. Thanks will report back. Oh, plastic little keeper under the shift mechanism is in good shape and the housing is not buggered up either.

Every time I get one of these chasis I get all new shift linkage to start. Isn't worth messing with otherwise with old parts that wear funny under load.
I have swapped out the later under the car assembly with the bushing that doesn't have the boot. There is a guy on forums that sells that bushing. I have found I put goop on the outer edges as he suggested to shore up bushing in cage and let it set so it doesn't move around as much.
All new name brand shift linkage kit.
Of course make sure that the shifter parts match up for the appropriate tranny speed, who knows what old owners have done swap wise.
Check for play in that ball where it rides, I have found I have to smack them with a hammer just to get a nice fit without causing drag.
Make sure the shifter arm itself and its plastic/rubber are in good shape.
Then the shift lever you should be able to tell if it has proper spring if its clamped together. Some parts can wear and the thing will sag on itself and not pop back up.
If all is well with that stuff I like to put tranny in second gear, loosen clamp and have a helper hold shifter in 2nd position before I tighten the clamp. Then off I drive.
Even then, it seems there is more slop then say an mk2 box, you can wiggle shifter a bit in dead zone, etc.
But you should be able to drive the car. I am daily driving my 79 rabbit for almost 6 months now. Reverse and fifth gears are easy to hit and in totally different areas. Never accidentally went into reverse, that should be a firm push down and into the corner.

ive never seen a mk1 ball wear like that... mk2 yep...
your issue.. the clip came out of the groove and shifter sliding thru the ball... hose clamp is that fix...
