wondering what you guys recommend for oil for startup and break in. also anything to watch for in procedure. (1.6 td)

i use valvo-crap as its the crappy oil for 400 miles.. then put good oil in.. like penzoil for the next 1k.. i stay away from "energy conserving oil" as they piss water.. once i feel the "switch of the flip" aka one day all of a sudden it comes to life real good.. its broken in ready for rotela..
i also beleive in drive it like you plan too.. the idea is to vary the rpm with out staying in 1 spot for long periods of time..

I use brad Penn 10w-30 diesel rated. When it feels good as crs said I switch to Schaeffer's. I also dump the oil faster than most. I spin a new filter on at 20 miles and top up. Complete changed my last one at 20 as well as 100 and 1000 miles. This one I think it will just get the filter at 20. I go with the idea of keeping the rings under a load all the time. Wheather coasting in gear or going on a flat I try to not let the rpm sit steady.

I agree. Steady sucks and taking it up and down under a load is the way to go as well as make the neighbors shake their heads. I don't care. I just dropped a set of rings in mine and I only manage a few miles to work each way so lots of up and down through town. I have felt it get close to that sweet spot more this week than ever. Going to have to idle is down I fear. Might be time to switch out the oil too.

Like I've said for years if they don't seat in 5 mins they won't seat at all.
A few hard throttle blips during startup after a minute of running and maybe let it go to 3k or so. and after a minute or so get it out and drive it. Ya need to load those rings.
Give it some throttle don't baby it. 1/2-3/4 throttle up to mid revs is ok.

manual talks about some kind of paste for installing oil squirters. is this a dealer purchase or even necessary?

there is an anaerobic sealer or you could use hylomar. IMHO it is needed. I guy on here had low oil pressure and did everything to his car to make it better. Vince Waldon then asked if he did this when he rebuilt. He did not. When he ripped it open, sealed them, and put it back it was fine then.
I do mine every time. In all honesty it is probably less leakage than 1 main bearing, but I would rather have it done when the engine is out than when it is in and you have to fight it.

I used 10w30 rotella, changed at 100, 500, 1000, then switched to 15w40 rotella for now. Idk but I didn't like the idea of using non-diesel oil in it. I didn't do anything drastic to break it in, just made sure not to let it idle long, and didn't go WOT at all. I also did some hard accelerations at least a few times during my drive to work, and some engine braking too. After 1000 miles I drove it normally. It's been around 8000 miles, and it must have broken in fine, it drives great, getting 45mpg so far this summer.

got it running today, seems great so far. lifters are a bit noisey so far, but other than that, all seems well.

Keep a high idle, like 12-1400 the lifters will calm down.

The last few engine builds I have done, I put the rings in a VERY dry cylinder. The theory is that the rings will seat faster, than if they are being lubed right from the start.
No problems of the ones I have done, and they would have shown their ugly head by now if there would have been a problem

if you did head work the lifters may be making noise because you need higher idle revs for more oil flow to head. 20 minutes @2000rpm, hot run time. this will also allow other parts to wear in before you drive it/put a load on it. start out driving 45mph max. different speeds @1/2 throttle max. 20 miles and change oil 1st time. or you can change oil after high idle running (about 30 min total; 20 minutes of hot run time @2000rpm). and drive to next oil change (100 miles) different speeds up to 45mph. change oil drive 50mph and near 250-300miles go up to 55, @1/2 throttle, 2/3rds throttle @55mph. 300 miles change oil again.
oil changes I use are after; high idle(#1). @ 100 mile#2.@250-300mile#3. @500miles#4. etc(#5)..
