Hi, we are looking for a good (true running) intermediate shaft pully, the one with the thin sides. If you have one can you send me a note with price? Or if you know of a good conversion, then what parts will we need. Thanks. It will need to shipped to West Coast, USA.

Just FYI the thin sides are actually bad news, you want one with no sides at all. The flanges can chew timing belts which is why VW stopped using them.

For the undates, do you use a different belt? I read on another post, that a guy used a different belt, but couldn't verify this and didn't know what different belt could be used.
This all started with my 83 yr old stepdad rebuilding his quantum td and he has chewed 2 belts, and can't figure out way. I have another 1.6 td he tore apart then put back together so I could store it and he broke the thin wall in several places as well as dented it. So, I figure his quantum is much the same and needs another pully.
The belt seems real close to the engine front without sides. Can we just run the old style belt with a side-less pully?
I appreciate additional thoughts
I hope I'm able to crawl under a car and rebuild one at 83 +!!!!

belt differance is in the teeth/nubs has a m shape vs a real block/flat shape...
that pully when worn to rasor edge or missing and chunks eats side of belt off...
i rember 1st 91 jetta i delt with new pully on... the market had already changed belts.. had to keep eye on the new vs old belts at that point.. 95ish.. as well new tech getting milage requirements at that point..
all those aluminum pullys that had chips/worn edges got value then..
used old beetle drum adapter.. and took 2 dozen and made new style pullies.. they were scrap aluminum to this point... so each car we pt new design belts on got new style pully too..

FamilyD, I went digging in the parts treasure chest and came up with an Idler pulley but the part no. on it is 068 115 021D I think it is off an 1.6 L Diesel. Flat across the top and with a thin part that makes up that face. No extensions over the edges. Will it do ya?
Let me know. Would have done some pics but ye ole phone says battery is drained, shutting down. Can PM later maybe with them.

Still would like a good used pully.
On another note, if the belt is different for the newer pully, do you need to change the other pullies also to match the belt?

Just to clarify, "rest the same" meaning you don't need to change others? If so, then what years belt and motor do you buy for the belt upgrade?

By "Rest Same" I am going to jump to the conclusion that CRSMP45 means that all the other pulleys with their little notches will still work. The belts didn't change the basic block size on the back they just put that design on them for whatever reason. I think the difference in the IMS pulley is that they did away with the edges on them and made them flat across the face. Like the one I have. I will pop a pic after work, WORK Sucks, sometime this evening. That is if I don't also join the CRS club.
Later DAS

Something like this?

yes the im pully changed in production in 90/91... like i said.. unless you find a 20+ year old belt sitting on a shelf.. just eliminate those lips..
the old flat notches.. think of how back of belt drives the pully.. now when laying the rear of the belt around it.. where is the belt pulling on its self??
the middle of the square notch.. so how tight is the belt riding that im pully then??
now to make that block into we will say M .. where does the belt put tenson when wrapped around the pully? the back of the belt as you no longer have the middle of square holding the tenson on the outside of it, think of it as a M with a bridge between the top humps..... so holds im pully better... no longer walks so no need for lips..
crap you figure out at 18 with no degree that you had no idea you learned till you type it out...
the old belts would have a glazing effect you could see on the smooth side of the belt.. would look like the teeth of timming belt in pattern.. from aluminum belt wear...
seriously.. really odd crap you had to see back then.. pics.. ha.. digital no exiost like internet.. i bet there is a vw dealer service bulliten somewhere from 90-95.. so the techs knew of belt design change.. reason may not be explained as thats what i got to experiance..
