Windshield for 1984 vw Rabbit
« on: June 07, 2013, 10:02:35 am »
Anyone know where I can get one? I have checked with safelite and a few other. I can't find anyone that has a windshield for a 1984 vw Rabbit. The 84 is glued in unlike the 81 with a thick rubber gasket.

You will need to purchase a rope-in windsheild and gasket as the glue-in seal is no longer available. The glass was available as far as I know fairly recently, but without the proper gasket your up a creek without a paddle...

So you can do that? just change back to the thick rubber gasket and the 81 windshield and have it work?

I am surprised this is NLA.  Doesn't the Cabriolet up to '92 use the same glass?  That's what I replaced my Rabbit P/U with.  Seems like there should be a good market for it.
'91 Jetta 1.6 NA, '82 Caddy 1.6NA, '81 Cabriolet,  4 Mercedes OM616/617s , 2 Triumphs and a Citroen DS19 in a pear tree.

Can anyone else confirm using the thick rubber gasket and 1981-82 windshield in my 1984 rabbit with a glued in windshield. I can't find any info on the internet about this working and the glass company's has no idea what I am talking about.
Thanks

i was always told by people who clipped those cars.. aka fix totaled bunnys to make good bunnies back when they were new the lip the glass gets glued too is thicker/wider then the other kind... but ive never had glue one to find out.. so never mattered to me..

so if you pull your plastic trim from around the glass.. mat be metal on yours on th inside.. measure that lip.. then get a measurement from a rop in with no glass you will have the answere... but besides that the hole size is same..

I have a old gasket from one of my old projects so I will try that. So do you know my truck from vwdieselparts.com. It was welded together. The front half is 1984 rabbit and the back half is 1981 truck. You were talking about cliping cars so I thought you may have seen my posts over there.

Just found what I was looking for on vwvortex, This is what i found. You can change your urethane glued in windshield to the thick rubber press in seal, but you have to use a windshield and seal from a 81-81 rabbit. This is where I found it. www.cabby-info.com/body.htm#windshield

well i knew that bout glass.... rubber hard to get on proper glass.. add a inch.. no way in hell..

but you asked a queston on what i was told by people who cut them in the pillers to weld 2 cars together... i know vortex is full of smart people and all... so trust who you want... im just saying take a measurement as i aslo see tons of vortex smart people *** they cannot fit stuff as the seal is wrong/screwed up/off brand.. but for all i know is they tryin to fit a rubber glass in a glue in car...

never owned mk1 w/glue in,.. so ive never measured... what i do know is car #1 was 80 rear clip.. 83 front.. and how this came up in discussion... but it was back in 89... car was built in 85.. wrecked 2 more times after clip job.. then i got it to finish it off.. was also wrecked 2x before clip job.. po was drunk.. bro of garage secretary.. so kept gettin rebuilt..
