Pretty self-explanatory... looking for a mk1 cold start advance cable. Kinda pooched mine while pulling the engine out.

If you can't come up with the original then pick up on a lawn mower throttle type cable.  Similar design in that you have a stiff metal wire inside a plastic casing.  You would just have to anchor the end at the pump differently.  There shouldn't be that much resistance that you couldn't make it work.

Good luck picking up a used one.

How many different kinds are there?

I have atleast 3 but I don't think any extra :(

My 79 rabbit has a little brown handle to the left/on the steering column.

82 jetta had a lever that sat flush with dash kind of like my 85 jetta

82 truck has another kind of knob that seems part of the cable that fits in the middle of the dash to the left of the radio.

Just looking at some bits and pieces it would seem you can't swap out the guts across the board because of the way they are anchored?
1985 turbo diesel jetta

3/4 in knob on the dash face between the radio and cluster...
