Putting a TDI engine into 90 passat synrco wagon?
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:08:29 am »
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5984690-WTT-FS-92-Passat-Syncro-Wagon

Local guy has this 90 wagon 2.0 8v swapped syncro wagon.

I know of 96 TDI passat car locally -

easily make 1 of the two to have TDI Syncro ?   Or much more complicated?

The Syncro came from up north and has some rust..  id want to inspect closer..

yep can be done... b4 is easy peasy swap into b3.. the tranny people i beleive they swap pieces to keep the gear ratios.. but gotta look into that closer..

You'll have to figure something out for the fuel tank because finding a diesel wagon sending unit is quite tricky. You can probably just use the gasser pickup but I'm not 100% sure.

I believe the syncros have a smaller tank than the non syncro and they use the shorter sending unit so a mk2 diesel unit would work.

i think instead i found a 91 16v front wheel drive passat wagon...

probably much easier for a tdi swap.. i hope.

is the b4 passat tdi drive by cable? so i dont need to do a gas pedal swap?

all tdi-e is comp.. only m is cable..

heater box needs swapped if you got complete b4 doner.. else you gotta get creative at ac comp lines...

ive done my b3 1.6td... bbob who posted here also we did his tdi-m swap here...

if you do a aftermarket fmic.. bbob should give you pics of his... i spent some time fabbing his up..

i think i can get ahold of 1996 passat TDi whole car..    so i would need to do a pedal swap?

the passat gets 20mpg mixed according to websites..

if i spend $1500 on donor car - then lets says $1000 on other parts , mounts , etc...  $2500

that kinda alot of mpgs to make up to save money....  but it would be long term investment which i am not known to do.. :)

im buying this wagon regardless -   did i read that the wagon has 22 gallon tank?  geez -   so you just use the stock gas tank and clean it out for the diesel swap...?

i want to do most of the work myself - the donor car has 200k+ but just had timing belt / water pump done...   i should do the whole motor / tranny swap ?  probably dont wanna use the 16v tranny..

I will make another , new thread - i am checking out the passat wagon thursday i hope and hope to buy it then..

thanks - this wagon looks really nice from the outside -  I haven't looked at much up close older vw guy been driving it for a long time..

doesn't want to drive a stick anymore

libbydiesel sells them and i highly recommend it brand new zero miles built to perform. Makes the swap so easy. Just have to get a diesel throttle cable from a mk2. You just have to come up with a cluster from a canadian b3 with and aaz which i might know a guy with one and a 90 amp alt.

if he has whole doner he golden... ic and all direct fit.. ps, hvac, rads, hoses... why make it a m?? now if pump bad, electronics ***ed..  mk3 into mk2.. yea... but b4 into b3.. no..

the float unit in tank is biggest issue...

-------------------rumor is, tdi wagon will fit---------------------------
not tested by me... but that needs modded or tdi one tried..

you still in boulder area? i know you flip cars like mad... i know a kid in denver who would want it when you get bored... also keeping it a "e" keeps the resale good too..

how fast you want this done?

i am thinking i may end up in cali inn aug... my ability to stop spend a few days for swap for right price is possible...

cali guy wants 337 kubvan there.. his 397 there needs to tow zuki back here... but 397 been off road for 7 or so years and needs bumper to bumper to tow zuki back.. :P

i can do you on way... we just need to discuss when and $ if interested..

Why go E?  What do you see as benefits?  I really enjoy wiring and electronics and I own both but would much rather have an mTDI than an eTDI.  With the M you eliminate 90%+ of the operational issues with these engines and without any real downside other than the loss of the fun data-logging features if you have VAG-COM.  The only enticement I'd feel in going with the electronics would be for a VNT which didn't come on the 1Z or AHU.  I (probably) wouldn't pull out the electronics on a stock car, but I sure wouldn't add them in a conversion.

I am going to go check out the Passat wagon today..   to be sure its something I want to pay $3000 for it , I do believe from what I have seen of it , it is that nice..

Then I would have to see if they guy still has the running , driving ugly Passat tdi rolling around that he painted PURPLE - I heard from a mutual friend that he would take $1500 for it...

Then once those two things happen -  its on like donkey kong...

e for him... he sells off his toys after a few mo... he gets bored..

i look at co and such emissions out that way...

b3 in usa had no diesels...

if he resells it when bored.. its a emission issue...

also if he has complee good running e.. why make m?

i only have a m.. i own no e.. :P i too agree w power reliabilty and all.. i worry bout resale for him... a b3 wagon tdie can move into 50 states no issue.. cali included... due to the 96 swap...
