1.6 revival
« on: May 18, 2013, 04:55:23 pm »
Hey all, been along time since I have been on the forum ... been running a gasser and the diesel sat idle.  Anyways it has been sitting for almost two years and now will be my daily, I have changed the oil and the water separator but am wondering about additives for the fuel and the oil.  It is only an '81 1.6NA and I was thinking of Lucas stop leak for the oil system, I do imagine the seals are dry as running now only for a half hour or so there is a small drip or four when shut off from around the crank area.  Before I spend the money to reseal it all I thought I would give this a try?  And with todays ULSD fuel I heard rumor that it was good to run a bottle of two stroke oil now and again to keep the seals in the injection pump as well sealed and to keep sticky noisy injectors quiet?  Am I on the right track or should I consider other options for additives?

Thanks to all and look forward to chatting again on the GTD forums ... Cheers  :)

T&H.  Finally got your senses back did ya?  If you have changed the oil and what I think to be the fuel filter, under the hood not the car correct?  Then I can't see dumping in anything until you start seeing oil seeping out here and there.

Since you have been gone from diesels for awhile I would suggest using the search tool here and look for diesel additiives, two stroke oil, wax in diesel and maybe even the classic MPG.  We have had many indepth conversations about what to add to WMO, WVO, Diesel and mixing Gas in Diesel.

To give you the quick answer, a shot of 2 stroke oil in the tank will help not hurt.  If you plan to do it often, like every tank there may be reasons to make some adjustments to the basic timing and fueling screws.  You should find most of what you need in the search functions.  I know PITA right.  Well, that is what it is for, so we don't continually repeat ourselves.  It is the penalty you pay for leaving the best little car in the world.

Ya, I run 2-stroke pretty much all the time.

People sure work to pass me after following for a very short length of time.....

I wonder why?
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

I noticed that lately I was pumping more blue smoke out the back due to poor rings and compression issues.  Folks started fading back every time I would wind it up in second or third.  Then on the two lane pass me with this evil look.   What?  It's a diesel!   May have this problem licked as the last two days have been re ringing it.  I know the exact hills in town to test it on now.

Yes it is good to be back ... if there ever was a place to find information on oil burners it is here and a great group of people.  I know I was searching around before I posted but was unsure what to search exactly so I was coming up empty.  Thanks for the tips, going to try a two stroke in the tank and most likely Lucas in the oil.  I am sure I will have more questions and hopefully I can contribute and help answer some.

Here is a pic for the click, it is as it sits minus the roof rack now,

How much and how often do you run two stroke? I was just checking into WMO and WVO and I am not in that league yet.

It wasn't much from what I remember.  Ounces per gallon or something close.  You aren't really trying to do anything more than make it a bit more viscous.  Thicker is better, like you say the ULSD is referred to some as skinny or thin.  When I do wax in the summer it is for two purposes.  Increase viscosity and add cetane.  I would use two ounces, by weight not liquid, in a gallon and then dump that in the 10 gallon tank for mixing purposes.  So not a great amount for the overall change.

I think the Lucas stuff does something of the same sort.  You can use it all year round and not worry about it turning to a solid in the tank.  Or worse the filter.

Yes something anything in the diesel to give some lubricity. 2 stroke oil is good. Old timers like ATF. I like the redline additive. Its actually a little "syrupy". I drive a mitsu diesel at work and for 2 years i have been putting in "clean" waste oil. Oil from lp/ng engines that may have less than about 30 hrs is my test.
I've dumped in 3 or 4 gallons at a shot on say 15-18 gallons of fuel.
I noticed the idle increases like 25-50 rpms with a high concentration of oil.
I dont run waste oil in any of my cars are you insane?  I've put a few quarts of cheap oil or atf in at a gas station when i have to limp to a station with diesel.
