N/A 2.0L Audi 5000 Head on a Turbo short block
« on: May 17, 2013, 10:53:12 am »
OK, I am trying to to research out if I can do this or not? I have a Turbo Diesel 2.0L 5cyl 1982 Audi 5000 with a bad head. I have a rebuilt N/A one from a 1980. I know about the head bolt issues, Got that handled. I notice the pre chambers are different on the two heads. Is that going to be a problem? The car is an Automatic and is going to be driven mostly on the freeway. Anything else I should be aware of??

Thanks, VW

I can't seem to find any topics pertaining to the 5cyl's but do find topics about the 6cyl and 4cyl engines having different size pre-chambers. I have read the turbo heads had smaller (30mm) ones and the N/A heads had larger (32mm) ones? I am actually experiencing the opposite issue. My Turbo head, which has 12mm head bolts has the larger prechambers and the N/A head, which has 11mm head bolts has smaller prechambers. Will this be an issue? I am trying to get this sorted out ASAP to get the car back on the road and don't know exactly where to turn... HELP!!

Is the td head completely broken, not rebuildable/repairable?

The metalurgy of the  older head probably isn't as good, but the prechamber size does not present an obstacle. The 6's are rumored to even perform a little better with the NA head.

OK I noticed something else that maybe of a concern. The size of the holes right below the injectors (under where the heat shields sit) are significantly smaller on the N/A head vs the Turbo head. They are almost as small as the hole size of the center of a heat shield. I actually thought at first the heat shields were still in the N/A head but no, the holes were actually that small. I don't think this will be a major issue as the heat shields would have the same restriction over either injector port??

I am going to run this N/A head regardless. The stock turbo head is cracked from the number 2 cyl all the way over to the pre chamber. It would be very expensive to fix the head. It also has the common cracks between the valves which I know some say that those are not as much of a problem.

I am going to still hunt for a true Turbo head. But since they were only available here in the US for two years (82&83), I am not sure if I'll find one. I have heard in Canada they had the engine until like 85 or something like that?? Just finding the N/A head was amazing. Due to their rarity, these engines are just not as discussed as the 4 and 6 cyl's. I have been trying to get as much of my info from the D24T.com website as they resemble the 6cyl more than a 4cyl but there seems to be a lot more traffic on this web forum.

I truly appreciate all the help and hope something here can help any future person looking for similar answers.
