AHU turbo on AAZ
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:52:25 pm »
I'm starting a new thread from a discussion here: http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=33393.0

I have learned that the turbo and exhaust manifold for my AAZ, which is going in a vanagon, is for an AHU motor. The turbo is a k03-006. The AHU manifold places it below the intake manifold, where it interferes with a motor mount.

If I get a K03 AAZ manifold, can I clock the K03-006 for the new position, and use it?

Are there any differences between the two turbos that will create problems?

It's been a while since I looked into installing one of the AHU K03s on an AAZ manifold.  You can use an adapter to rotate the turbo 180° and it will work fine.  I believe Karl @ Westyventures used to sell the adapters.  Trying to install it directly onto the AAZ K03 manifold will not work.  The center fastener will work, but the width of the triangle is different, if memory serves.  Also, it will interfere with the mounting bracket that way.  HTH.

I've got an AHU K03 exhaust manifold for sale if you need one. Why mess with adapters if you can use the real thing!

libbydiesel: Thanks for the info. I might contact Karl. I'm thinking more and more that it would be better to find a new manifold/turbo combination, but that is also proving very difficult!

vanbcguy: well, I have an AHU manifold that came with the motor & turbo, but unfortunately it positions the turbo in the way of a motor mount.

It looks like Prothe has the adapter plate: http://www.hansparts.com/AAZTurbocharger.aspx

Also, I think this is something I could make with a drill press and angle grinder . . .

I asked Prothe if I could buy one of these adapters for the exhaust inlet flange - I haven't heard back yet. I still don't even have the manifold (though I did find one for $150 ! :( ).
