1z mtdi
« on: May 12, 2013, 09:37:11 pm »
Went to the Pick N Pull (4 hour drive for me) as they listed a 97 TDI.  When I got there only the bock remained, no sensors, computer, head.  Block is in good shape..so I picked it up.

I'm going to replace the 1.6 IDI in my Jeep with it (I also own a 1z Passat Wagon).  Since the electronic route is not an option (I'd have done it if they parts had been there), looks like MTDI for me.

Route 1: I know I'll get hit hard on this one... Emiata sells this: "This is a mechanical pump that can run the 1.9 TDI engines. This pump is based off of the 1.9 AAZ or 1.6 TD Pump Body, so it will bolt on to the 1.9 AHU/1Z engine without modification. To engineer this pump I disassembled VW's own 2.8 M-TDI pump sold in Europe and copied the internal design. Prior to shipping, this pump will be installed on a 1.9 TDI engine and test run, so you can be 100% sure that the pump will work right."

Has anyone tried one of these? Its the price that is attractive ($530) as I have no pump now (I have several 1.6 non turbo pumps, but that does me no good)...

Route 2: I'd consider building my own (I've torn mine down before), but there seems to be a huge number of threads on this and they get way long and never boil it down to the simple facts.  Take part A+B+C+D to get a MTDI.  Seems people go different routes, with different results.  Does anyone know what thread actually covers the MTDI build in a way most of us can do (and follow?).  If the Emiata pump isn't a knockoff, might it not be a bad place to start and build from there?

I'm also looking for a lower sprocket (crank) and complete head (as near complete as I can get).  I'll post in a other forum in a minute, but if you got what I need, PM me.

I picked up the short block (not including the 8 hour drive) for about $150.  It turns over fine, no apparent damage..  The drive (for me) goes over Route 36, which is about as scenic as you'll ever find, so its not all a loss..One I make on a whim at times...

Even IF the pump isn't a knockoff.. Prothe has been known to sell genuine BOSCH pumps that will never run an engine again..

I personally wouldn't spend the cash on a Prothe pump, but instead find yourself a mechanical pump off of a 200/300TDI Land Rover in Europe. Almost a straight bolt on and go affair, it is what I run now on my AHU M-TDI.

I used a later AAZ pump mount, with the larger snout. I also used the AHU pulley for ease and convieince.

I thus retained the twisting of the pump style timing, by elongating the holes in the pump.

There are a couple of folks on here selling M-TDI pumps for about $1k. Well worth it on my opinion.

I may well have a 300TDi fuel pump for sale i the next day or so, I' not sure what postage is like though.
You'll need to machine out the mounting bracket still, and fit VW 'output ports' to fit the injector pipes.
Was going to get it refurb'd, gov mod and an aggressive boost pin

I like the idea of the LR pump, seems logical enough.  Get back to me on the postage to 95540 and price.

Seems 1.9 TDI 1z heads are a bit pricey...anyone here use Prothe heads?  I really want one that will go 400,000+ miles..

  Its always about risk/versus benefit.

I've used his pistons with no problems.  It's pretty well known those, from him, are fine.

Best new head price I've found is $1500 for a bare head.  Used is $900 so far.  Then Prothe sells one for less than $500 (new).

Saying VW builds quality products, always, wouldn't be fair either.  Door handles anyone.  Or defrost foam.  Or power window motors.  Or clear coat peeling off almost always.  Or how about how the Wagons in the B4 years having the rear (disk) brakes wear all disproportionate.  Intermittent electrical problems...  All of these are flaws of the B4 Passats (and other VW's of those years).

I bought something from Prothe that was decent on quality, but missed the boat on actually working.  No problem in sending it back.  Getting VW to fix the above, inherent problems, has never happened.  and the door handles to me are a safety issue.

What would be helpful if people chimed in with what worked, and didn't work, from him.  As I see it those of us who still drive the older TDI's (and VW's) need to support the merchants who are willing to try and give us products that we can use to fix our cars.

I got a used AHU/1Z head complete with cam, injectors, injector lines and pump bracket off of eBay for $250 shipped.  $900 for a used 1Z head is absurd.  You can get a complete used 1Z engine for close to that.

Put your location and car in your profile and it may help. Prothe is basically garbage on all items, especially engine related. I used his pistons and probably will never do that again as KS pistons are only 150.00 more and have good rings on them. By the time you get a set of Goetze rings it is only 60.00 difference. The main issue I have is he is passing all this stuff off as good. I don't support guys like that. If you had no clue who he was and just started to order stuff as you saw new and assumed ok quality, then a year later you car is non functional or scrap how much did you really save?
If you want a TDI head and haven't found one better than 900 used, then I will sell you mine and buy 2 for that money. Look harder.

b4 doorhandles and win reg have to come from stealership with vw logo on them.. else the aftermarket is even worse junk.. sad right.. trust me.. spend the extra on b4 dealer items for those...

b3 same door except the skin.. bu tthey do no teat handles/have the silly roll pins fall out.. and do nto eat the teeth off the regs.. and the tracks that hold the window do not bend like on a b4.. but it sux... i hate b4.. suggest b3 due to how cheap those got...

now a b4 dash/radio surround is far superior to a b3.. stronger better plastic.. but i hate b4 headlight switch.. :(

1z and its companion was only used in usa for 86-99.5 in passat (96-97) nd jetta 97-99.5 so yes not common for spare parts.. the 99.5-pd is also only a few years.. but able to be gotten in bug/jetta and golf.. so more of them... just not as simple for a mk1/2 conversion

proth... kinda hard to screw up cast aluminum... honestly... as longs as the casting is good.. no reason to not try it... not like it has precups to fall out so on...

The AHU head will interchange with the 1Z.  Boraparts sells complete NEW OEM AHU heads for $950.

I ordered the only used one on ebay for  $500... is what it is... Not even I wanted to risk the Prothe head...

From now on I'll monitor the "local" (2.5 hours away) pick n pull and get email alerts.  Any ahu/1z that comes in will have me there that day pulling heads, pumps and a few other items until I have some extra parts...
