Interesting.... Using a ball bearing to press heat shields back into shape for reuse. I didnt think they really crushed or deformed. I figured it was the black oxide coating acting as sort of a sealant

I prefer to use the ball bearing, a spacer with a hole in it to hold the ball onto the top of the heat shield and crimp it with a larger sized vice grip pliers.  I check the space on the injector and if not enough turn the pliers a quarter of a turn and squeeze again.  I think that advice came from Quantum man as well. 

Been doing it for years and never had a problem with them reformed.

I'm pissed now. How many times have i been held up doing a project because ,well, the book says replace em.
 but now i have to run around and try and get some locally or wait for an order to come in.
 More times than id like to think.
Not that i havent thrown a used one back in and gotten lucky.
Yay now i dont haveta worry or waste time anymore. I probably have 5,361 used ones in a box at last count. Maybe ill practice on a few

The problem is that you won't know if they worked until you have trouble. IF you have trouble they will cook the nozzle and gum up the injector hole and threads. Reshaping them with a ball bearing is OK UNTIL your new ones show up, but it is really short sighted when they only cost a buck. Shop around and buy 20 or 30 of them when they are on sale. I use them to make up the difference to get free shipping.

I suppose if you are running junk that you have apart every month, its not a big deal, but every single injector that I have seen with a leaking heat shield was bad. The rest usually are still good/usable.

There's a lot of things I can make work, used heat shields fall into that category.
I'm glad for the knowledge and ability, but equally glad I don't have to use it regularly.
