comp experts... usb question..
« on: April 26, 2013, 10:57:43 pm »
ok here is my set up... or layout if you will...

tower in living room.. hooks to big flat screen via hdmi/dvi as it allows the tower to supply my surround sound..

i have a duel moniter vid card.. some day ill get #2 so i can run 4 moniters.. rember i dl all things i watch via web unless i catch by antenna.. so a 20" or so will be added to living room as extended display..

ive had it plugged into moniter in my bedroom on other side of wall.. life good...

i had a cheater box to split vid between 2 moniters for years.. sucked w/big screen so got vid card...

where usb come into this... after 3 years.. the cable i picked up and ran thru custom pvc pipe set up.. liviing room celing into my garage.. vid cable, powered usb, and audio.. why????

using my old splitter.. the 2 19" moniters run well off it (one flat, one old tube style at that).. so 3rd "moniter/flat screen in garage works after 3 years of not being plugged in.. :P yea kinda slow.. " but at least when building i added the pvc and cables right?

the reason has always been to run my vinyl cutter in the garage off usb.. reason for powered cable.. this works !! yea.. tested 1st time now

the problem.. wireless mouse out of range... can i use a usb splitter and add another wireless at the end of a 50ft usb powered extension with the vinyl cutter on it... think of it as a printer.. i know they sell the make 1 into 3 usb ports type of thing... but do they work? my moniter cable does have mouse/key wires included.. just kinda like wireless if i can..

really.. seriously.. 3 years... and i owned it all thru this time.. sad...  gotta figure out sound now.. :P need the cable to plug into tv from the extension.. i can crank up volume though if need be :D sound carries.. but it will not power a set of 13 year old e machine speakers i just removed from the original sealed plastic bags.. came w my 2nd comp in 00.. :D never used..

next time bbob or theman stops by they may crap themselvs...

You ask:

I think you are near the limits of USB at the 50 foot mark.  I would just try moving the wireless out there and hooking it up to the line from the cutter to see if you even can make that work.  Maybe you have already confirmed that is OK.  But I think those combo boxes work well enough that you might try one.  If it doesn't work take it back.  Buy and return.  Everyone does it.

2nd way to look at it...

will a printer, usb wireless thinggy work at same time off one of those 1 to 3 usb contraptions..

the cable was made for what i did with it.. :D was lots a $$ but vs a 2nd comp.. to do what i want my main one to do.. far less money.. :D

one day ill get a simple laptop to run it.. this way via power inverter in my kubvan i can do shows and make car ink on the spot if i want too..

It should, might not be pretty tho.

I would try to use a powered USB hub.

get a POWERED usb hub.. and then just use wired keyboard and mouse, instead of wireless..

even new RF wireless devices have limited range..

remember, these things are only made to work from up to 15' away or so, and thats a direct line of sight as well..

most wireless KB/mouses wont go thru walls, or out to the garage.. lol

btw, it doesnt hurt a single thing to have multiple keyboards and mice plugged into a single PC..

thats what i would do tho, since you already have USB, audio, and video to where you need it.. just split your usb with a powered hub (really important here, being that you are on such a long run, and you only have one (maybe 2) source USB ports, and the signal strength is probably less than stellar after a 50ft run.. plus, USB only puts out ~1 amp per USB port..

anyways, theres my $0.02
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.
