You need the automatic throttle cables and the special bracket that goes on the IP. There is a bearing/bushing that goes in the end of the crankshaft that isn't present on 5 speeds. Good luck finding a 010 diesel starter. They are rare and you do need one.
I'll be running a 010 auto also in my 84 jetta with a 1.6td I talked to my friend a local VW guru for 35 years - he said it is real important to protect the starter from heat - as it is close to the exhaust\turbo.It is very common to drive somewhere, get back in and start the car - but it won't turn over as the solenoid & starter has been overheated by the exhaust.

So the relay goes between the ignition switch and the solenoid?
