010 diff swap. Torque convertor?

Ok, the diff blew on my mom's 010 (ATF got in the diff fluid and the bearings are totally shot. I picked up a low mileage unit but it's off a gasser and the diff is a different ratio. I'm planning to just swap the diff onto the tranny. However what I don't know is what torque convertor to use.

What is a torque convertor matched to? Engine? Tranny? Diff? All 3?

I think Torque converters are usually matched to the engine no? You got TJ I assume?? It should lower cruise by like 200rpm too.

Tj is not very common.  I think the torque converter is matched to the engine but I do know that the diff will effect the stall speed, either way I don't think I'd worry about.  Make sure u grab the speedo gear to match your diff

I did manage to score a TJ! My math says 300 less RPMs on the highway! It almost makes it worth fixing the rest of the car, or swapping this tranny into the Passat instead of the 096.

I'm glad you guys are saying engine because I didn't get a torque converter with the tranny. Or a speedo gear for that matter, but the speedos always been off by about 15% anyways.

Also pretty much any gas diff will be an upgrade gearing wise except old rabbit junk

Turns out I already had a TH transmission. It has a 3.13 final so I'm going 0.01 taller. Yippie Oh well, it will mess less things up I guess.

Does anyone know what would cause the "tranny" to make a high pitched grinding/squealing noise when cranking? It only does it when cranking and I tried 2 different starters with the exact same results. I tried shimming the starter out more but that made a worse different sound so I put it back.

are specs for a th in one of the bentleys?  no idea about your odd noise.

Yes MK1 bentley diesel. It's 82-84 with TD engine 3.13:1 (final) 2.71:1 1.50:1 1:100 for TG and TH

Hmmm if I remember correctly it is possible to seat the torque converter incorrectly. Not sure if that would cause the noises you are hearing though.

The bushing in my torque converter was way out of spec. I replaced it today. I hope that was the issue.

Seems to be the case. Yippee. No more scaring everyone in the parking lot when the car is started. It also appears that 120 indicated is only 100. That's going to mess some things up. Oh well. At least it runs.

I thought my older mk2 bentley book listed stall speeds and codes for converters? If it wasnt a list it was in the auto trans section.
