fyi cam be made 12mm by drilling rear corner holes.. and using a spacer between head and headbolt washer (i grind down old air cooled head stud washers to fit the head... aka diameter too big)... the bolt length is wrong..

someone once told me a head stud kit for a ford cosworth would allow the use of an 11mm head on a 12mm block if the holes on the head were enlarged to 12mm. never tried so don't know if it's true or not.

once was in sf bay area...needed engine for caddy. got on cl...found in reno. wnt there and bought the car...took it back to SF. was 81 rabbit with 12mm head bolts. at least that wut it looked like. put engine in caddy and head east , I=80. engine gets hot. pull over in reno   .    take engine apart. found some meathead had put  11mm head on there...drilled holes out...took 12mm bolts and cut them down. i was fuct.

why my "spacer" method works... reuse w/new headbolts..

sadly ive done this too many times.. 11mm heads seem easy to find as their blocks crack... hell the modded 11mm head on my b3 wagon is from my 1st car i built in 89.. i modded that in 07 when the b3 cracked its head.. and my 11mm one i ported in 96 when i added a bae turbo to it in my caddy.. 100,000+ mile head when i got it.. i myself 500k easy...

s spare non trusting 12mm head.. dislike its exhaust valve seat someone put in fo rmy *** me in trouble... and i have a complete running in great order 11mm 1.6 set up.. and my 81 coupe has a 12mm w/11mm head commin out when i strip it down.. with no home per say.. if proto engine i building fo rmy jack rabbit fails that will go there.. so at moment.. got lots of idi.. also have a hydro 1.6 set up that someone is buying..

but the info is for those who need a head and are spooked by 11 vs 12.. it works.. just the spacer thing is not well known.. i redrill all the hed bolts.. but honestly.. the rear 2 are the issue ones.. the 12mm bolts fit the other holes.. just rear corner 2 are smaller dimeter..

if its a 1.5, 1.6 non hydro idi diesel it can work..

newer non hydro 82-86ish goto 12mm head bolts.. this can be modded.. to work.. but will directly fit all the 1.5/1.6 11mm blocks..

no idea what a ME came in or year used..

if hydro... well get hole welded up.. redrilled to 12mm.. it can even work on 1.9idi.. best choice no.. but for the price.. worth it for a save my arss head..  honestly.. this is the idi head for the shelf.. it will fit them all in a damb it cracked and im poor situation..

12mm mech? I know the MF engine were either hydro or mech, but the ME I thought were all hydro. All ME were 12mm for sure.

No sir, all 1.6 ME coded heads are Hydraulic valves.

Volkswagen Golf (07/85-07/92), Volkswagen Jetta (07/85-07/91).

The JP and CR were 1.6 Mechanical valves, and were available as an engine option until 91. However not in North America as the ME Hydraulic took over. CR from 80-82, JP from 83-91.

Volkswagen Golf (CR: 8/80-7/82, JP: 8/83-10/91), Volkswagen Jetta (CR: 8/80-7/82, JP: 12/83-10/91)

1985 MF and ME code engines had mechanical lifters. 86 and up were hydraulic.

1986 model year and up yes, 85 model year was still a mechanical engine. It would have been a 1984 JP code engine, not the ME which was a 1985 engine and debuted in the 1986 model year as a hydraulic engine.

ME and MF were hydraulic from day one, and that is the reason they got a new engine code.
