Mk2 strut fit concern
« on: March 05, 2006, 11:27:56 pm »
I would never have even concerned myself with the thought that aftermarket springs might fit a gas Mk2 VW, but not a DIESEL Mk2. Then, while searching the net for some replacements for my worn out OEM units, I find myself on SHOX.com. They claim the "H&R spring kit" "DOES NOT FIT DIESEL"????
Anyone venture a guess why? I thought the suspension setup was the same across the Mk2 Jetta/Golf line regardless of engine? Is it referring to stock struts being different on diesels, hence the H&R's not fitting? I'm confused, and in need of struts that are garunteed to fit when I go to install them. I'm on my own when it comes to VW maintenance where I live.
Thanks, if anyone knows the answer.

They likely claim that it doesn't fit diesels due to the weight differences. The suspension stuff is all interchangeable. MK2 and MK3 stuff is as well with the difference being the mk3's don't have removeable strut inserts. There are some other changes and whatnot such as plus suspension and the 96.5's started using a smaller spring cap. That shouldn't be of concern to you though. If you're looking for a suspension kit I'd highly recommend Weitec stuff. I use it and it works great. It's cheaper too.

There is no difference in the suspension, other than spring rates. The diesel (being heavier),will be be too much for most aftermarket springs rated for a gas motor.

Sounds like you need stiffer springs. You could also add a small spring spacer, which would help too.
