Sound in Transmission at idle

So i've heard this a few times when i'd stop and take my foot off the clutch for a second, it would sound like a weird whining noise for a second. but as soon as I pushed the clutch back in the noise would go away. But it would only do it every once in awhile, but today it started doing it more regularly. I was adjust the fueling down on my pump with the car running, and as my idle dropped it started making that wierd noise. I got in the car and pushed the clutch in, bam no noise, and if i left the clutch out and rev'd just slightly to raise the idle a bit, no noise. But it definitely doesn't sound right.

Is this a problem with the TO bearing? Or the pressure plate clutch assembly? Idk. I think i'm not going to move the car again until i figure this out I might just go ahead and do a clutch job and check things out just to be safe...

Any upgrades for our clutches? or just the stock sachs clutch is fine?

It could be the clutch throwout bearing or it could be a bearing in the transmission (the transmission stops spinning when you push the clutch in). Something is loose and rattling and when you lowered the idle it rattled more.

My car does the same thing, and has done it for the 40,000 miles that I put on it, without any kind of catastrophic failure. It just keeps going and going. I have a spare transmission I'm ready to put in if it does.

what tranny/car wil help...

if 020.. no.. that bearing inside tranny covered in gear oil...

now if you list a car too that will help...

mk1.. the firewall will flex and some mk2 do too... the firewall flexes with load on clutch pedal.. and will give growel/gron sound..

Mine did that noise until I replaced both the front seal and sleeve along with the throwout bearing in the rear.

Noisy here too till clutch in, new clutch, TO bearing, pushrod bushing, seals, etc.
It also sings a little in 1st, it's old. It'll get louder before it dies.

mine was noisy, and my clutch hub was loose in the disk..

Well that's refreshing to hear. At least it isn't unheard of or a sure sign of death. Since I posted this thread, the noise has disappeared for now. Trouble shooting intermittent problems is a nightmare...

Anyway the car is a 84 rabbit l. Its got the 4a so that's on 020 right?

I'm sure I'll need a clutch eventually. Might be a good time ...

Could be the springs on the clutch disk rattling.   Although maybe they would only make noise while the clutch is pushed in. Not sure.

RedLine MT90 instead of MTL quited mine down a fair bit fwiw. 
Haven't been on any long hot-trans trans drives yet.
