noisier than i remember?....
« on: March 01, 2013, 08:28:59 am »
Hey all,

Just drove my 93 diesel jetta (AAZ) to work..(45 min) for the first time in over a year...(shady mechanic, bad timing...long story..)

anyway, it seems to be noiser (Ie clackity:) than i remember.....lol, i realize its a diesel, but still...it runs and drives fine, lots of pull and power...i was just curious to see if there was anything i could do to help quiet it a bit without tearing the engine down (which frankly, probably isnt worth it:)

it just had a fresh oil change and coolant flush, and was just retimed to factory specs...

Thanks

Paul

What's the temperature where you are?  Guessing pretty cold?

You will definitely get more diesel clack when it is cold out.  Is your engine warming up completely?  That will also have some impact on how noisy it is.  If you have a bum thermostat that is opening too soon and you're not warming up that will cause quite a bit more noise.

Timing also has a significant impact - I see you say the engine was just timed.  If it was running retarded before then it would have less clack than now.  Or it could be advanced more than necessary.  Advance = clack.

Finally fuel will make a difference.  If you are burning bio for instance you will probably find the engine gets quieter than when running plain diesel.  Here in BC they now blend about 5% bio in to all pump diesel which makes a noticeable difference.  When I fill up in the states I definitely get more clack than I do when running on "local" fuel.

well,

its 5-10 c outside today.....im just on the other side of the mountains from you.....:)

My engine when driving gets to about a 1/4 on the guage and stays around there....if sitting at idle, maybe 1/2 way up the guage Before the fans kick in and it goes back down a bit........but never more than that

I'm not sure if its anything i should really be worried about though....

Depending on the drive, 45 minutes may or may not be enough to warm the engine up. 45 minutes cruising at low rpm with no load? Will not likely get it hot. 45 minutes romping from light to light will get it hot quick.

If it s got good power, starts well cold, and isn't excreting any odd colour smoke. Leave her be. Could just be you haven't driven it in a year too??

For anyone this may help in the future....

i thought my car was louder than i remembered....and was right..turned out it was my idler pully goin' bad.....after it left me on the side of the highway, i replaced it, and it is defiently a bit less "clackity" now
