AAZ in Mk1 Caddy with Air Conditioning
« on: February 20, 2013, 04:05:16 pm »
In July 2012, a posting addressing the AC in a CADDY with 1.9TD AAZ mentioned two factors using the AAZ with Serpentine in a Caddy.
Issue 1.  AC pump hits the front radiator support.  The topic starter indicated he cut and re-inforced the radiator support to make room for the pump.  I have done the same, and it fits great and I simply love the serpentine belt for alternator over V-Bellt.  No issue there.
Issue 2.  Lower radiator hose hits AC pump.  Topic starter found no resolution yet.  He is looking for a RADIATOR to accomodate AAZ AC.
I found that a Griffin Race Radiator for a Scirroco fits, and it has the bottom radiator hose on the left side under the battery.  The upper radiator hose is on top right.  The Griffin radiator is a two row radiator which is much THICKER than OEM radiators.  All aluminum.  Has bottom ears which can be drilled and screw inserted into radator support.  I cut the stock radiator shroud down and brazed it to fit. With POR15, it looks awesome.   It has two glitches in use.  The top left hole for the radiator fan switch is 1/2"-14 thread.  Initially I used a 10mm 184 degree two prong switch and adapter, which works, but is about 15 degrees too hot and too late for good use.  But really, with a radiator as large as the Griffin, it was hardly even needed.
One of my reasons to upgrade to a larger radiator is "I'm fine to 70mph, but 75-80mph, running with traffic on freeway, I got warm with OEM radiator AND DESIRE AC !  So I wanted more cooling. With a 184 degree switch, the fan rarely comes on and the radiator fits and looks awesome - just HUGE until you run fast or want AC.
So I ordered a "Derale 16749 Adjustable Fan Control Thermostat (Thread-in probe)" which has a 1/2"-14 probe, and is adjustable from 150-240 degree.  I consider this problem closed.
New Issue: I used a long raditor hose to route the coolant back to the starter and to the L/S lower radiator.  Temp solution.  Next I will fabricate a mandrel bent pipe that has brackets to bolt to engine/transimission. After 14k use and one oil change, I now have all the info to build the pipe.  One of two methods.  Either I will replace the lower waterpump elbow, or I will s-curve the pipe to be a solid connection, as the pipe will be firmly fixed and bracketed to engine, and the flex end will be under the battery.  Will posted when finished.

But here is my problem.  I have a stock AAZ VW Sanden style pump.  I originally planned to use a steel line set off of a 190D mercedes.  They may not fit.  I prefer steel AC fittings over aluminum.  Where can I get steel fittings that I can braze onto my existing hoses?

I'm using the stock 93 up VW AC pump same on AAZ engines.
Pretty sure I'm not the only guy putting the AAZ with AC pump into a MK1 with steel ends on AC hoses.
Where can I get steel AC line end fittings that I can braze onto my existing MK1 hoses?

You might get more info on vortex where people have swapped later engines into mk1's. Dieselheads tend to delete a/c to gain a precious hp or two.  ;D

Most any hydraulic hose shop should be able to convert things for you.

First I do not want to delete AC, I have plenty horsepower with the AAZ to propel the little CADDY and provide AC.

Second, I would prefer not to pull the large hoses.  If I had the steel fittings, the job would be done in 15 minutes.

I am a do-it-my-selfer.  The love is for fixing it myself.  Theres no appreciation for paying someone to do simple stuff.

Is there a internet site with AC hose fittings?  Anyone bought their fittings?

I wasn't telling you to delete, pull hoses, or hire the shop to do it for you. I was suggesting to go to them and buy the fitting you need to do it yourself. I do not know if there is an internet site that offers what you seek, but if it isn't on ebay it probably doesn't exist.

Virginian is the scrap metal capital of the east cost, and has few good fabrication shops.  I have been to several shops to make the AC hoses here in the Richmond, Petersburg VA area.  First they don't want to do the job, second they want to do the entire hose, and not fit it to the vehicle.  I have yet to find a place to make the hose and ensure it fits.  If I show them a damaged one, they can make one just like it...And here in VA, hydraulic shops don't make AC lines.  And I have found no shop that will fabricate and charge the system.  Its 1.5 hour drive to Richmond from my house, and trust me, I have tried to find a shop to do the job.  Hense do it myself.

First I had to install a radiator that allowed the hoses to fit.  Done.
I am looking for a site like these.  Hopeing someone has done it before and knows what fitting will work.
Just which barb to use would help.

Does anyone have any experience with these fittings?

I could be zeroing in on a bolt on solution.  My question based soley on the picture and description is:

What holds the two fittings onto the pump?  Is there a plate that you put the bolt thru?

As soon as they are open I will call them.

Well,  if it seems to good to be TRUE, a bolt on solution from male  high side 3/4"-16 male oring fitting
and suction / low side 7/8"-14 male oring fitting , its because these fittings are discontinued.

Discontinued.  No longer stocked!

In pursuit!  Will find a solution soon!!

After calling a few business' and running many leads down gopher holes, to no end.
Seems most Sanden pumps have the fittings going into the side body of the pump.
Those two illustrated above for 7176 Sanden won't work on VW AAZ pumps, but do on TDI (SOME)
VW AAZ Sanden pumps its on the end of the pump.

Anyone used one of these?
