Glow Plug Wiring Question
« on: February 14, 2013, 07:55:11 pm »
I found this schematic while searching for glow plug wiring info for my b5 gas to aaz conversion and hooked my mk2 relay and connector up as pointed out by Vincent, all works well except for terminal 50. It's not turning off the timer but resets it once the starter is activated. It's a shorter cycle than when originally tripped but it is definitely not turning it off.

In the above post Vincent mentioned that "I've probably mis-led you with the label on terminal 50... the starter terminal... 'cause it's the trigger and the defeat."
Trying to figure this thing out it seems that terminal 86 needs to be the trigger as it has power when the key is in the run position as it operates the pump and once tripped it starts the glow plug timing process. Terminal 50 - on the other hand only has power to it when the key is in the start position so that the starter is actually engaged, with the key only in the run position there is no power going to the solenoid.

Am I doing something wrong as it appears I can't get the timer to stop via terminal 50 once it's been activated. I do have terminal "T" connected to the coolant terminal.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Here's the wiring diagram for the relay socket... it will need to be connected to a dedicated coolant temperature sensor and the starter feed:

The coolant sensor tells it how long to stay on for, and the starter feed tells it to shut off as you attempt to start the car.

Note that it's intended to drive the fuel shutoff solenoid via pin 86... you won't need that line since you have obviously figured out a different way to power the solenoid as part of your swap.
If you can't take advice - then you can't be helped!

Most GP relays energize the GPs briefly after the starter disengages (Post-glow).  A test light can confirm.

I've not seen the coil ground for the relay (86) go to the fuel cutoff. I think terminal 86 goes to ground via the fusebox buss 31. The fuel cutoff is independent of the GP relay, as many owners remove the relay without effecting the cutoff function.

Terminal T is probably best regarded as a primary glow interrupt and  post-glow trigger.

Okay that makes sense, terminal 50 is for the post glow and I can assume then that terminal "T" is the one that adjusts the length of the timer by the temperature of the coolant. All's good then.
Thanks.

Oops my typo... yes T is the temp terminal, 50 is the trigger/postglow .
