Porting a 1.6 head
« on: February 14, 2013, 06:04:02 am »
Hi, I am building a 1.6 for tractor pulling. I will need to push it pretty hard to compete. Going to port a 1.6 head. On a turbo engine should I open up the exhaust side a bunch as well as the intake side?

I am hoping to run 40+ psi of boost if I can get enough fuel into it.

If it's a hydro head put in some AAZ intake valves. They are the same length as 1.6TD but 2mm bigger (both 7mm and 8mm stem diameter available)

Is there a benefit to going to 7mm instead of 8mm (less stem to block airflow, etc.)?

Yes, better flow, but it requires changing the valve guide, valve seal, locks and retainer.

bbob.. yes... need to remove guides to port it properly.. guides = recut, so when valves lapped in it on fresh surface.. if your doing it right...

any one can half arss it.. but for what he doing.. skimp = fail..

If he has a hydro bottom end, wouldn't he come out ahead just using an entire AAZ/1Y etc any 1.9 head then a PD150 intake?  The 1.9 D ports look SOOOO much better than the 1.6.

Upsides and downsides with the Franken combo, the valve chamfer around the valves in the head does not really match up with the 1.6 bore, neither does the prechamber port end up in the correct location. But it flows well anyway. I guess this might explain some of the knocking noise one sees on the Frankens.

For a daily driver I would use a 1.6 head to keep the easy cold starts and for less knocking sounds. For a full race engine, the 1.9 heads have their strength in the fact that they lower compression ratio alloeing more boost.

Both heads have massive gains available through porting!

Thanks for all the info and advice. I am starting out with a 1.6 head because that is what I have. I don't want to stick a ton of money into this until I see how it competes.

Can I put 1.9 intake valves in a solid lifter 1.6 head? I don't have my head apart yet so I don't know what size the guides are.

Solid lifter heads have different valves IIRC, meaning 1.9 valves won't fit :(

1.7, 2.0 and 2.4 engines has 36mm intake valves which fit. Exhaust valves are same size in all diesel engines.
