« on: February 06, 2013, 05:20:55 pm »
So I got my new Injectors the other day, torqued them down and the fuel return lines/barbs are,  North and south, if you will.... instead of east and west. here is a picture. what do I do? i tried turning the top part of the injector and it is to tight to go the rest of the way. and injector is also to tight to go the rest of the way.

The direction of the barbs varies. Cut the tubing to reach, is all you need to do.

The halves of the injector are torqued to a specific value. Loosening or tightening could mess with your breaking pressure. So dont' do it that way. There is really nothing you can do to fix this, maybe they would be different if you swapped out injectors from hole to hole, but heat sheilds are only one time use, so to do this could be costly. Just do as TD says and cut to length.

Well I already broke one top of injector loose what do I do with it now, and the heat shields can only be torqued once?

Torque it back down.

They are not going to blow up or anything bad. They can get brittle with the torque and heat. You can anneal it if you are really worried.

Let me guess the color of your car, Yellow?

When initially torqued, the center of the heat shield is deformed to seal against the injector nozzle.  If they are reused without being returned to their original shape, they will leak carbon up between the lower half of the injector and the nozzle.  They also will not perform their function as a HEAT SHIELD.   ;)

The only ghetto way I would try to fix it would be to have someone hold the bottom with a wrench and then torque the top to *I think, check before doing it* 51ft/lbs.

Libby what are we going to do with these guys?

Step one: remove all four injectors

Step two: verify all heat shields have proper curvature, How?  turn injector upside down, place heat shield on injector face.  Does it have a line between the injector body and the shield that is open air about 1/32 of an inch wide.  Probably not as they have been smashed down once already, maybe twice.

Step three: using a pair of vice grips, a socket that support the edges of the heat shield and a round metal ball bearing reset the curve of the shield such that an air gap exists between body and shield.
Option 1 buy new heat shields but you are wasting your dime doing it.  Look on this thread for links and pictures to said process.  Safe, cheap. Do it all the time.

Step four:  Repeat for all other injectors.

Step five: Place injector you cracked open in 27 mm socket and using a 22 mm open end wrench torque to 90 ft lbs.  Option, place body of injector in vice and use said diameter socket to torque to spec.

Step six: Re install all four injectors and torque to 51 ft lbs

Step seven:  Install injector lines and by pass hoses.

Step Eight:  Crank it and start it up.

Step Nine:  Enjoy the ride

If your working with a cylinder head that is new to you (maybe brand new or not), the injectors can have different final alignments after torquing, between heads.

Check on your manual for how tight to the injector halves need to go, some are tightened to 51-52 ft/lbs.

From experience, do no use those heat sheilds again once torqued.
Course you have been warned.  and also got advise to take risk.
At least order new heat sheild and replace when it comes in.

that be the one.  And others since asking who the heck does this and does it work.  Seems to work for me until something bad happens to the overall condition of the shield and then I toss it.
