1.6 NA Hydro Cam Wanted

Hydro cam needed for my 1.6 ME engine. I had a bad day and broke one of the cam lock tabs off mine. It was one of many stupid things I did that day. I'm terribly embarrassed. Help me before I do something dumb like run this cam, or try to TIG the broken piece back on. Thanks!

How bad is it? Pics? Im running a cam with a busted end on my td engine to no Ill effect.

I did start it and watched it at an idle. It seemed fine. I called 2 different recycling yards in Canada,  embarrassed  myself with some terrible French then found out the camshafts they had listed were actually nonexistent. Maybe it's just a sign to run this cam. I honesty feel a little better knowing someone else is running a broken one.

I thought that's what "breaking in" meant. Clearly I was mistaken.

No worries. I'm confident that there are a lotta broken cams in service.

Just run it. there are a ton of cams like that on our 1.6s and 1.9s out there. wont cause any issues at all!

Thanks all. I guess the only problem will be when I have to re-time it, there will be a little less meat to hold that 45N of torque when installing the cam bolt. I like this solution. No additional work needed, and more importantly, no additional money needing to be spent!

next time if you don't have the sprocket counter holding tool, use  a large crescent wrench on a cam journal closest to the sprocket.  use a hammer and punch through a hole in the sheet metal to remove the sprocket so you don't break it.

Ja, the cam alignment plate is not to hold it when tightening the bolt. It's just for positioning.

To tighten the cam bolt after lining-up, use a pulley holding tool.

Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. Clearly. I'll make a pulley holding tool stat.

cams only need big corresent wrench on lobe... fyi... only need tool like that when vc not removed.. bbobs tdi cam was abt to break when we went to remove his.. took 2 people with wrench to hold it... stupid tight..

delta cams, tacoma washington.. id call them.. they regrind stock solid lifter cams into hydro config.. can do performnce grinds so on.. ive used their schrick copies in gas burners.. been 13 or so yers.. but was no core 132 shipped to door back then..

garage i worked at years before that.. 94ish had sent them a few solid cams to convert to hydro due to this issue..

I have used this method probably 250 times now. I get a chuckle when my so called wrencher friends see me do it and they cringe. I then proceed to tell them cam steel is loads and loads stronger than tool steel.. that is why cams last for 650,000 with no wear in our engines lol.
