Wow killer deal.. To any one thinking weather it's cheaper to have yours machined.. Also I can't help but notice this head does not have the "normal" cracking between the valves!

Your welcome, GLWS!

Franks TDIs? That guy's a ***ing scheister. As me how I know

I would NEVER consider sending him anything. Is his work nice? I'll never know because he STOLE my head in "exchange" for labor to the head THAT I DID NOT AUTHORIZE (i.e. "lifter bore repair"). I told him to inspect the head for a possible resurface and THEN we'd go from there. What does he do? He spends 4 hours piddling on the head before he does the ONE thing I asked him to.
So, I wouldn't consider Frank's TDIs a reputable comparison for headwork. What he charged you $350 to do, can be done by just about any shop for about $200. The $40/valve he charged you is a bit high considering you can get the same Osvat/TRW valves he sells for about $15 each online. "Stage 2 AHU" FEBI camshafts can be bought new for about $120 (AHU/1Z stock camshafts). They have more lift, but less duration. I'm not sure you'd get much HP gains from that. I ran the same cam in my 1.6D with no effect, after Fred told me that's what he uses during an extended phone call.
^^ sorry you had a bad experience..
I knew my head needed work when I sent it to him. I wasn't surprised at how much it cost.
I've heard that heads he has rebuilt are the quietest heads out there. I've heard nothing but good things. I spent hours on the phone talking to him about my head and what's best for it. He had a mixup in that he was awaiting parts for other AAZ heads and forgot that mine didn't need them (pre cups).
As for the cam.. I plan on getting some high numbers out of mine, and sure with no other mods it won't do a lot. But with each extra step you take you get that much more. I ha to buy a cam anyways so yea it was either $140 or $170 more.. Mide as well spend the money now instead of kicking myself in the anus later on. I have a friend who has first hand experience with a frank cam. He said it beat the breaks off a colt cam. Also from what I read franks cams have a better durability to them.
Frank did try to sell me other parts, head gasket, ect. And I quickly pointed out that his $75 head gasket could be had for $25.. He acted surprised but not at all mad that I had not decided to get t from him.
He is a good guy and everything you'd said sounds like its based on biased opinion. From what I get you didn't want to spend any money. What's the difference, if your bore was messed up then I needed to be fixed anyways. Why would you send a head off to get surfaced when that could be done anywhere. Although you shouldn't surface diesel heads.. You paid the man to inspect it, he found a bore screwed up. If he had called you would you have said "nah don't worry about it send it back".. No you wouldn't have. That's a $50 job for one bore. Almost cost that to ship it to him. If you would have just wanted it back.. Then shame on you. You already have it in the hands of the best. Why not have him do the repair??
Your right not a good comparison, but if you want something done right you pay for it. If not then buy a Honda.
