Hey guys, need some help disabling the alarm system on my GL, my key switch is acting all funky and when I start the car the flashers keep coming on...(I have already cut the horn part out)...I am going to install a pus button start but I need to get rid of this alarm first...I have a haynes manual but it does not say anything about this alarm....
anyone dealt with this?

Are you talking about an MK3?
I have done it... You have to pull this alarm module/relay thing and then connect two of the wires that went to the relay together (I made a "shunt" basically a piece of wire with a male spade terminal at both ends that goes into the relay socket). Those are the wires that go to the starter, they're the heavy gauge wires. The module is behind the dash, like by where the headlight switch is so, you have to take that bezel out for access. I think it's actually two modules and you take them out. It's obvious because they're the only relays that are way up in there where the sun don't shine. They made them hard to get to for a reason.
There are some videos explaining the procedure on youtube, google "Volkswagen Jetta disable alarm" or something similar.

I should mention though, that the key switch replacement is something you need to learn how to do if you plan on owning Volkswagens for any extended period of time (unless you plan to just permanently use a button to start the car and a switch to turn it on). The switches on these are CHEAP and don't last very long, so you have to change them every couple of years. It's not hard (but you do have to remove the airbag if your car has one), and the actual key cylinder itself seldom needs replaced, just the electrical switch which is separate.

There is a wire in the loom going from the body to the door.
It shuts off the alarm when you turn the door key.
I can't remember the color but I jumped it one time to help a friend with no driver's door lock.

Still didn't say if it was a mk3, on vortex there's a removal process of the alarm controller just behind the left/drivers vent. It's pretty easy to remove. You just remove it and the two heavy wires need to be connected together. If it's newer, can't help.

the switch is NOT hard to replace.. it will take roughly the same amount of time/effort to replace the key switch, as it would be to SAFELY add a starter button..
the ign switch is secured by one small screw to the lock cylinder..
pull steering wheel, turn signal/wiper stalks, ignition wire plug, and finally, the lock cylinder with the ign switch still attached..
the ign switch is cheap as well..
atleast LOOK INTO fixing things right the first time? you would be surprised at how easy it is to replace the ign switch..
